Advance praise for Mind Your Life:"The mainstreaming of mindfulness has become something of a fad. Unfortunately, many authors in that genre know much more about the mainstream than they do about the deep end of what mindfulness practice can deliver. Not so with Meg. In this book, you will find evidence-based coaching strategies to help you turn good intentions into a sustainable practice."Â --Shinzen Young"My curiosity about meditation and mindfulness practices had been growing but Mind Your Life really provided the impetus and skills for incorporating it into my daily life and realizing the benefits. I met Meg in La Guardia as we were both on route to a Cynthia Bourgeault retreat and had plenty of time to get to know one another due to an eleven-hour delay in our flight and an unplanned overnight in Bangor. I both witnessed and sensed the embodiment of the wisdom that has come to print. As a long time meditator, I didn't need the book to increase my commitment to meditation. I was interested in Meg's practice and if it might be integrated with my Centering Prayer/Zen practice. I've read many books on the topic, but whether it's from knowing Meg personally or in discovering how I resonate with the Unified Mindfulness System she teaches, I've chosen to take this book slowly and with discipline, letting the practices, not too dissimilar from mine, become even more habitual. I recently shared "Feel-See-Hear" with a woman I mentor and she reports renewed excitement over her daily sits. The mistake someone would make with purchasing this book, in my opinion, would be to simply scan through it and move on. Don't.
A truly excellent overview with detailed, compact advice for anyone thinking about or wanting to get into mindfulness or mediation to either reduce stress or negative thoughts or to build 'flourishing' and greater enjoyment of life. Meg very clearly and competently covers the full range of types of approaches to this now very popular topic - with the why, how to, when to, how much to, all spelled out in ways anyone can pick and choose from to find what suits them best. This is the best part - no doctrinaire "you must do this" but a very easy to understand outline of the range of options, from the original 'sitting in meditation' to the 'moments of reflection in the midst of activity' so you can choose what fits you and what you can stand. As a long time believer in this stuff, from my Zen readings in the 60s, I know it works and have often thought of trying to write just such a book as this. Thankfully now someone has so I can point others to what I've tried to say, now all summarized in one easy place.. I learned 'the hard way' by trying to interpret Zen stories and meditation advice into methods that worked for me without sitting and in the midst of what turned into very hectic, stressful careers, undertaking tasks that others often fled from.
Meg Salter did an excellent job putting this book together. You can tell she's a coach, because the format of the book offers needed structure in a conversational tone.I practice the Unified Mindfulness system of Shinzen Young, but have practiced other forms of meditation throughout my life. The UM approach is unique in the way it systematizes meditation and teaches you what is actually going on in your mind and body. Meg Salter makes the UM system even more approachable by cutting through some of the complexities through a few simple approaches and frequently reminding you of definitions. She provides practice suggestions and templates, so it's like having a personal coach.I also really liked the narratives of real people applying the practice. Generally, I'm not fond of "real-life" narratives in how-to books, because I felt they interrupted the flow. Meg Salter weaves them in seamlessly. They offer ideas for your own practice, by how others used the UM mindfulness practice Salter teaches. Also they can help you relax the grip on making sure you "do it right" that I find most people have when it comes to meditation. As a career coach and Buddhist teacher, I have already used some of her methods with clients and plan to use her book as a resource in the future.
As an executive coach, I often encourage my clients to engage in a mindfulness meditation practice. For many of them, this is a new concept, so they want to read about it first. Before Meg Salter wrote Mind Your Life, I had trouble finding a resource that wasn't too theoretical, too Buddhist, or too touchy-feely for my audience. Finally! Mind Your Life is a much-needed resource for anyone who wants to know more about the heart (motivation and purpose), mind (neuroscience and biology) and body (mechanics and outcomes of practice) of meditation. The concepts are presented in a way that's both practical and powerful. A terrific contribution to coaches and meditators alike.
Wow! What a special book. The author is so clear and gives the reader such a great primer on Shinzen Young's wonderful method of mindfulness meditation. This is, in my mind, the "go to" book for anyone interested in learning a very approachable method of meditation. I teach meditation and recommend this book to my students.
