the author described the topic on starting Lithuanian, which is not a simple language to learn. I was a little skeptic at first, but then a whole new world opened to me and It helped me revive my rusty, crusty memories of Lithuanian and for that I was most grateful and as a phrase book that tries to navigate a communication sharing, I was impressed with its attempt to cover the essential issues encountered while traveling and it suffers the limitations of all "phrase book" approaches (lack of explanation of how to move beyond a phrase or two, or even how to understand what is being said back to you if the respondent does not use a familiar phrase), but the format is engaging and accessible and on a very practical matter, if you are going to visit Lithuania, most Lithuanians know enough English so as to make learning their expressions more a matter of friendliness than necessity and this is a very handy book if you want to feel somewhat engaged in the Lithuanian milieu, and by all means it is a wonderful nostalgia trip for any one of American-Lithuanian heritage who has lost contact with their ancestor's tongue and this is an excellent book on learning the language and everything is very simple described, there are tips how to learn faster. super author thanks a lot.
I have no idea what the other reviews are talking about because I'm looking at a skimpy, 79-page little pamphlet. If there's more to this $14.99 purchase than what arrived today, I'd be grateful to know about it. But the person above who wrote about reading of the city (I assume he/she meant Vilnius, the capital) is looking at a different book from what I have. From the way this was set up in Amazon, I was expecting a couple of volumes, and if that's the case, I'm missing one. Or more. This is the bare minimum -- and I do mean bare -- of what I was expecting.
I investigated this book based on my exposure to the Lithuanian language with my grandparents from birth through early childhood. I learned only a few words and phrases then and hoped that this book would help me recall them. It didn't come close. Be aware we're looking at 70 to 80 years ago. I had hoped that besides refreshing my memory with how to ask for bread and butter for instance, the book would recall other words and phrases I'd learned. I know my grandmother told me how to ask for chicken soup, she also taught me other words and phrases she thought it was important for me to know, but this book did not assist me in remembering what they were..
