This book is laid out with both Spanish and English translations right after each other making it very easy to interpret the story while you read it. Excellent for the beginning Spanish student!

What a great book! I took Spanish in high school because it was a requirement for graduation. I really was only interested in passing the class for the diploma rather than LEARNING a second language (how foolish I was as a teenager!!). Now I am wiser (and definitely OLDER!) and have decided it is time to really LEARN Spanish. This book of short stories is a fun way to learn how to read Spanish. It was challenging but not too difficult for a beginner. I read aloud so I feel like my pronunciation got a workout as well. I really liked how there was a summary in English and Spanish at the end of the story. I love the comprehension questions at the end as well. I read the vocabulary words at the end of the chapter before I read the story and that helped me as well.

These are fun stories and great practice for anyone from and advanced beginner on up. I could understand most of the story but found the translations helpful and it made if much easier to keep on with the story, both reviewing words and verb tenses while reading and learning new words without losing site of the story. My son who is studying advanced Spanish in college has been enjoying reading them out loud to us as well, and just skipping the translation mostly, but even he leaned some new contexts, such as new expressions that might not translate directly. The stories are funny and interesting but not too hard to follow in a language that we are learning. Actually, they would make a really, really great audio book for those of us that line to practice Spanish in the cat!

I am really glad to have found this book. I am an advanced Beginner in spanish. I have been able to understand what i am reading, while i have been challenged at the same time. The stories are fun with a good story line and even a moral to them. I will read and re-read these many times, each time i know i will learn something new. The english translation is right there, easy to find when you need help. There is also a vocabulary list (which i find helpful to read before and after i read a story.) then there a little test at the end of each story. I like that. I can see how much i really understood. I would recommend this book for anyone learning spanish.

This is an enjoyable way to practice and expand your Spanish vocabulary. Very helpful!! Well worth the price.

Let's start off with the basics:It is a reader containing spanish language stories in parallel with english. This is good practice for someone who wants to read spanish while feeling the need to occasionally look over their shoulder and to check out whether they understood something correctly. It also contains vocabulary related to a story. It is best suited for beginners and lower-intermediate-level learners. Very good resource.My only quibble is that they do not put the Spanish and English translations on different pages side-by-side. Instead they put the English and Spanish translations on the same page right on top of each other, which makes it harder for you to read without looking over on the translation below the page. I would prefer it if there was only english on the left side of the book and only spanish on the right side of the book - but since they made it for kindle, I do understand why that happened. If it was in print, then I would not want it to be like that.Get it and read it. Very good resource!

Those of us preparing for ordained ministry in seminary often asked for courses or seminars on parish financial matters. As a priest in my second parish since ordination in 2009, I feel fortunate to have taken a course by the same name by James B. Jordan through my seminary's online learning program: CALL, via the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. I recommend this book to seminarians, the newly ordained, old-timers who never learned best practices of financial management of parishes, vestries, treasurers, church bookkeepers and parish administrators. Respecting the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved with church money from the time it hits the collection plate, is counted, deposited, posted, reconciled and is spent or invested is critical. I learned how easy it can be for anyone with access to church money commit fraud and embezzlement if leaders don't take responsibility to insist on creating and following well-documented processes that include regular oversight. I'll use and recommend this book for as long as I serve in the Episcopal Church.

Every Episcopal priest needs to read this, as does every treasurer, vestry member, bookkeeper and parish administrator. I use it in training new church bookkeepers who don't have ecclesial experience and it is fantastic. He leans hard on the side of doing things right—which is what is needed when churches tend to cut far to many corners in this area of their ministerial life. It is practical and yet complete. An EXCELLENT resource.

Mr. Jordan's book is a great resource for those who work in the parish, especially clergy, vestries, financial staff, and volunteers helping with any sort of money. This book would be especially helpful for those in seminary preparing for ordination and work in the church, school, or some other Episcopal institution as most seminaries do not spend a whole lot of time dealing with these matters. The book is very thorough but not overly complicated for those who don't have a business or financial background, and is a good book to go back to again and again when financial questions arise.

We in the Church have a responsibility to be good stewards of the money that is received. This book is essential for all Episcopal Clergy and any Vestry member. It is loaded with information, well organized, and easy to comprehend. The book provides for strategies, processes, and procedures that can be implemented regardless of the size of the church. The real world stories make it apparent why this is so important. BUY THE BOOK

This is a terrific book! It is essential for all parish priests to know how parish finances work in order to promote a culture of transparency. If the parish priest doesn't care about finances, then it is going to be easy for fraud to occur and for financial mismanagement to deplete the budget. Every parish priest needs to read this book. It is a terrific resource that equips a parish priest with the skills necessary to manage church finances. It is easy to read, and honestly before reading this book financial language intimidated me. I was able to read and understand every page. It was not overly technical. It was accessible for people who have no background in church finance.

There are concepts, policies, procedures, information and suggestions contained in this book that apply to ALL churches regardless of size or denomination. You will find eye-opening scenarios and actual events described by the author that will make you take a step back and re-examine the financial management and practices of your church. This is a must read because the changes you may need to make at your church will protect the financial health and integrity of the church and those who manage the finances.

As this book points out fraud is prevalent in churches and had occurred in 1 of 3 churches that James Jordan had audited. Vermont is a region of enchantment for these several dark tales collected by Citro (Shadow Child, 1998, not reviewed) from every county in the state. The author declares his stories to be strange but mainly true, though theyre taken from older Vermont collections, archives, libraries, journals, periodicals, and newspapersand thus are recycled, or even paranormally refurbished, yet Citro tells us that many are seeing print for the first time. His first alone is enough to make you a doubter of the rest: in 1887, five elderly Vermonters, crippled and past the age of usefulness, were drugged, stripped naked, frozen for the winter in a big wooden box, then revived the following May and fed a hearty meal. Implied is the idea that their infirmities were somehow overcome. Retold also is the story of Hetty Green, wicked witch of Wall Street, who enjoyed destroying people and who, as a result of her obsession with money, became the richest woman in the world. Too tight to rent an office, Hetty worked out of a pile of crates and boxes on the floor of New York's Chemical and National Bank. Vermont also produced a great mental oddity in Truman H. Safford, who once correctly computed in his head a 15-digit number multiplied by itself. Citro narrates his own overnight stay in ``The Dickens Room''of the Inn of Long Last in his hometown; he was kept awake, he says, by what may have been the scraping of Marley's chains. Other tales concern digging for Captain Kidd's long-lost silver, and the Green Mountain States cryptozoological jungle provides for other curious encounters. I first discovered this book on a friends shelf in Florida. I am from VT so I had to look. It was incredible to read these tales which take place all over my home state, even down the road from where I grew up! The writing is well done and easy to read. If you enjoy haunted history, Vermont lore, or just ghost stories in general I would recommend!

I loved this book! I live on the NY/VT border, so I spend a lot of time in southern Vermont, and it was so great to be reading about places that I have been to. It's really interesting to have a mental image of a place because you've been there, and then you learn that this place has a much darker past than you ever could have imagined, and the picture changes, but your interest increases. It's really cool. Citro's books are some of my favorites. He's a great author - I love his writing style.

While not as full or well-founded as his earlier books (more a collection of snippets), this book is another excellent collection, rewritten with incredible prose, of bizarre tales (some bordering on folklore) from Vermont's green hills. He paints a fascinating portrait of our magical land, as well as our people. Grade: A-

Yet again, I have been enthralled, scared and drawn in by Mr. Citro's tales about my home state. He even covered my home-town ghost in this installment, which thrilled me to no end. He is truly one of our master storytellers, and I highly recommend all of his work.
