Karissa moved to the small town to have a better life for her, her daughter with her best friend. Her ex-husband has done some bad things and isn't about to let them go. When Ray bumps into Karissa and her daughter he can't stop thinking about her. They start seeing each other and he loves her daughter things seem to be looking up for Karissa. Until her daughter tells her that she saw daddy outside her school. Is her ex in town? Can Ray protect them all? This is an amazing story that will draw you in from beginning to end. The chemistry between them is off the charts hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

If you like mountain man romances, you will enjoy this book. The characters are interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written with a happily ever after. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of Karissa and Ray. Karissa moved to town to get away from her ex-husband who was an abusive alcoholic and was in trouble for stealing money for his gambling. Karissa moved with her best friend and her daughter Malorie. One day she was going into the hardware store and ran into Ray. Ray lived on the mountain and only came to town when he needed something and kept mostly to himself. Ray had moved to town after his brother was killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Ray had enough of people and now just wanted to be alone. When they saw each other a few days later, Ray helped Karissa when she fell and he asked her to go for a drink. They spent the day together until she had to get her daughter from daycare and Ray asked her out for the next night. Karissa agreed to the date and they had a great time. They began seeing each other and things were going well until her ex found her and threatened them all. I really loved this story. I love how Karissa helped heal Ray and brought him back to life. I think she showed him he had a reason to go on living and not just hiding out on the mountain. I love how protective Ray was of Karissa and Malorie. I think they were great together. Well done.

Karissa, her daughter and best friend move away from the big city to a small town in the mountains. Karissa's move is to get away from her abusive ex husband and to give Malorie a safe place to grow up. Life is slowly getting into a routine and adjustment is going really well.Ray moved to the same small town a couple of years ago. He is also running from demons of his past and city life. Known as the town loner, he enjoys his mountain escape. Ray never thought he would find someone to connect with and maybe share his life. Karissa never planned to get involved with someone, but Ray's kindness and strength were her undoing.Chloe Morgan's stories are always an enjoyable read. The men are usually show a very tough outside, but are usually teddy bears on the inside. They show that it is ok to be human and vulnerable. The connection between the characters are great and some of the side characters bring additional humor and humanity to the story. It was a great read and I would recommend this book and other stories she has written.I received an ARC for a fair and honest review.

Yummy Mountain Man Goodness.Ms. Chloe Morgan sure knows how to craft a great romance. Single Mother, Karissa and her beautiful four year old, Malorie, have come to this small town to escape a horrible man... Her Ex. Relocating with her best friend was meant to bring them peace. Running into Ray, local (loner) mountain man, was just a bonus and just reiterates how a man is supposed to treat a lady. Lucky for her, Karissa is his lady of choice. As they start to build a real relationship, her Ex shows up to ruin everything. Or will he? Can these two characters get their happily ever after and build a Family of their own? Find out here in this fantastic release. Trust that Ms. Morgan never disappoints.I voluntarily requested an advanced reader's copy of Mountain Man's Girl in exchange for my honest & voluntarily given opinion and I highly recommend reading this book as well as anything written by Ms. Morgan.

A good short read that gets right to the point and a perfect read for a break. Karissa moves to a small town with her daughter, Malorie and best friend to get away from her ex. She literally bumps into Ray in town and is immediately attracted to the man and it helps that Malorie is at ease around him from the get go. When she bumps into him again she can’t resit his offer and are soon togther, but her ex has other ideas...will Ray get there in time.A good short read with steam, a bit of suspense and a read that doesn’t waste any time. I liked these two and the no drama between them or others getting in the way. I also like how Malorie accepted Ray and how Karissa was at ease with him right away as well. The best friend was amazing that added a bit of humour in the read too.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

Oh man! Talk about steam. Chloe definitely doesn't leave us hanging with this little jewel. We have it all the hot, spicy mix that tingles all the way to our toes. Chloe pulls us into this amazing storyline with an incredible plot that brings all of your emotions into play front and center. All the trials and tribulations our main characters suffer through find a little sunshine in a most unlikely place. Their chemistry is instant, intense and palpable. Twists and turns along with a few glitches and scrapes really bring this baby roaring to life beautifully. The characters and scenes are written with such are written with such realism it pulls this little treasure together flawlessly. Amazing job Chloe, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advanced Reader Copy of this story.

Excellent tome- must read for someone going into criminal law.

°Art Campbell is that quintessential courtroom lawyer many attorneys aspire to be: A sharp-eyed poet packed inside a ferocious modern gladiator. Fearlessly critiquing the judicial system and his own experiences in and out of the courtroom, Campbell's melodic prose captures the blood, sweat, and tears of a battle-weary soldier, marching ever onward to secure justice for his clients and the greater good of society. Lay people, law students, and seasoned trial lawyers should all drink from Campbell's third--and most revealing--book. Ezekiel E. Cortez, Veteran California Defense Attorney and Freedom Lawyer.°Volume Three of TRIAL AND ERROR vividly captures the middle and later years of a "freedom lawyer." Campbell reveals how citizens get snared by the legal system and how this impacts the client, the lawyer, and society. Campbell shares his commitment to rights enshrined in our Constitution and Bill of Rights-- plus the importance of protecting and defending these rights. Alex Landon, Defense Attorney, former Executive Director of Defenders Inc.°Buckle up! You can't learn this stuff in a law book! At the turn of every page I discovered something that would otherwise take me years of my own trials and errors to understand. More than just courtroom stories, this book makes you reflect on your own life's journey. Thanks to Campbell we can all become better students of life. I want my own to contain as much insight and vigor as he has for practicing and teaching freedom law. Ashley Turner, Law Student. "Read this book on the career of an amazing Freedom Lawyer and he'll show you how important the U.S. Constitution is to all of us. This wonderful book will help you understand law and the world around you, what makes our courts tick, and how to respect and use the law in your own life." Jerry Gerald ("Jerry") Blank, Veteran Solo Practitioner, San Diego.°Through Campbell's stories of wit and irony, I relived many of my own courtroom battles. In this third volume Campbell completes a life-long search to integrate freedom law with his sense of self by confronting his warrior face-to-face. His relentless pursuit of awareness and self-honesty is an exemplar for all of us who search for purpose and integrity in our lives. Both humbling and inspiring, the trilogy of TRIAL AND ERROR is a must-read for all law students and freedom lawyers¡ª and especially for those facing the cross-roads of a career. Nancy Song, veteran Public Defender. In the third book of his trilogy Campbell continues pursuing freedom-law in Washington, D.C., courtrooms, depicting some remarkable struggles. Then he sheaths his sword and enters academia to teach future freedom lawyers. With more time for reflection Campbell makes self-discoveries which alter his life. But he returns to court in San Diego to defend the right of his wife and others to protest nuclear weapons-- a difficult task indeed. Campbell's writing is thoughtful, inspirational, and from the heart. Justin Brooks, Nationally heralded Director of the California Innocence Project. With biting wit and humor, Campbell takes the reader on his journeys defending real people caught inside the cross-hairs of our government. His portrayals are at once heart-wrenching, thrilling, and enlightening. Campbell¡¯s trials remind us that, by protecting the most downtrodden in society, freedom law protects the rights of all Americans. Adriane Bracciale, Defense Attorney. Campbell takes us on a voyage through the criminal courts and the mind of a remarkable trial attorney and legal educator. He reveals not only insights into courtroom strategies but also into human behavior-- what makes attorneys, clients, jurors, and judges tick. Sprinkled with humor, these accounts give readers extraordinarily candid views of what it means to be a lawyer motivated by love of ideals, love of the game, and love of people. Jean Ramirez, Professor of Law. Inspiring! Everyone who seeks truth, justice, and the vindication of the innocent will enjoy and benefit from Campbell's collection of glorious vignettes. The author's brutally truthful accounts shine light on the human factor inside the criminal courtroom and provide valuable guidance to lawyers courageous enough to practice freedom law in the labyrinth of our criminal justice system. Professor Laurence Benner, a former Chief Public Defender and member of the Board of Directors of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association

I feel compelled to write a review about this trilogy of books. When I first laid eyes on the cover of the first volume, I said to myself, "Prose poetry about criminal law? Seriously? This I gotta see!"Wasn't sure what to expect: how does one write poetry about criminal law in a way that could fill an entire book? Would it contain clever limericks? Moral tales? Would it be classic poetry with careful rhymes, or more of an modern piece with unusual punctuation or abstract imagery? Wasn't sure what would wait in those pages, but if someone wrote poetry about a topic like criminal law, there's no way I wasn't going to take a look at what that would be.The first book immediately sucked me in and didn't let me out until I turned the last page. Describing this trilogy is not easy, but I will try.First, the style is closer to prose than to traditional poetry, so there is no rhyming, sing-song, or limericks, or any of what some might expect when they see the word "poem." Instead, it is a rhythmic telling of a series of true tales. You forget you are reading poetry. It feels like pure storytelling. The reader feels rapt, like a young child at story time. The phrasing and tempo traps you into an alternate reality where you become the author (who is the main character) as he journeys from his first experiences in the courtroom through his last major trial.Based on true stories of actual criminal cases and trials, I can safely say that the stories are of the category titled: "You can't make stuff like this up." The writers behind shows like Law & Order could not have come up with a more interesting path through the foibles of human behavior. There are no good guys, no bad guys, no geniuses, no dunces, no villains, and no heroes. There are only people, in all their complicated glory. The characters are complex, authentic, and often humorous. The main character is one we can all relate to. His silent mental "face palms" when he makes a mistake, his ready admission of his weaknesses, and his honest introspection are a joy to read. His victories become the reader's victories. This trilogy does an amazing job of highlighting the fact that nothing in life, the law, or our souls is black or white. All is grey, in all of its gorgeous shades and intensities. The author touches on some pretty deep philosophical exploration of workaholism, ethical dilemmas, love, friendship, poverty, politics, greed, and even global decimation. The author shares a bit about his love of horse riding, and the best way I can describe this trilogy is to say that these books have hoofbeats that carry you with a steady rhythm to the story's end. I can't wait to see if the makers of Law & Order ever create a new series adapted from this book, called "Trial & Error: Tales of Freedom Law." I would tune in for sure.

Trial & Error should be in the back pocket of every lawyer and law student. I'm neither, but, after reading Arthur Campbell's Trial & Error, The Education of a Freedom Lawyer and the previous two volumes, I feel that I have a semester of trial law under my belt. But more important to me is that T&E was just fun to read, full of life's wisdom and insight - "...sword of truth is the only blade that heals as it cuts" - wrapped in a fast moving narrative. This work abounds with alliterations, similes and metaphors. Art combines words in fun ways - "...you're trapped inside an igloo of resentment, but breaking out could bury you inside a blizzard of hostility", "...paddled to the witness chair as if heading up the creek to bag some frogs..." and "...gore your oxymoron".Art's brand of free verse condenses everything to the essentials and keeps things moving along at a good pace; you never feel as though you're getting bogged down in needless info or technical stuff. Read it, learn and enjoy.

At first I wasn't sure about buying this as it wasn't a "typical" travel guide. I'm so glad I read the reviews and went ahead and bought it. It was PERFECT to use on our trip to Beijing. It gave us all the practical knowledge that we needed to navigate what is an entirely different culture than here in the US. We had an amazing time there most likely because we knew what to expect about a lot of things ahead of time. If you are traveling to China this is a must buy. You can get a lot of travel info on the internet but this was "real life" information.

This is my favorite China guide! The book is easy to read and packed full of useful information. (After two trips to China, I can confirm that they know what they are talking about.) They nailed it when it comes to bathrooms and hotels. I very much appreciated their insight into reconfirming flights and immunizations. (After reading the book, I double checked by shot records and noticed I never got my 3rd Hep B shot!) It was the perfect read to get ready for an upcoming trip to China.

this should be the first guide book you read on China. I've traveled abroad extensively, I wish I could have had a guide like this for every place I've been. You can read where to go and what to see books to your hearts content, but none of that matters if you can't get there or are injured or get too sick to enjoy yourself. I truly recommend this as your *first* book in planning any trips to China. Use the other ones to fill in the blanks.

This book contains a collection of advice collected by the authors during their numerous trips to China. This advice is valuable when you travel outside the big Chinese cities (Shanghai and Beijing). I travelled to Shanghai recently. I fortunately I did not had to bring my own toilet paper from my hotel in order to use public toilets in museums and other public places as the book recommends.

I am ethnic Chinese but do not speak or read Chinese. However I was raised with Chinese sensibilities so the subtleties of the culture were already ingrained in me. I went to Shanghai,Hangzhou, Xi'an and Wuhan. I traveled with a friend from China who now lives in the US. There are some good tips especially about etiquette in the book but there are others that are missing. Some tips may be dated because the pace of change in China is so fast. Foremost is that you don't need to bring US $100 bills. There are Bank of China ATMs with English menus everywhere that work fine and have much more security features than in the US. At Shanghai airport, there is a currency exchange machine that sucks your money in and dispenses RMB but that is the only place I used dollars. You need RMB for everything because the only places that accept US credit cards are hotels. The other cards you see people using in store are debit cards that require PIN numbers and they only accept debit cards from Chinese banks. You should warn your bank that you will be in China so they don't freeze your cards. Bring a couple of cards because they will be refused sporadically. Hotels charge 8% service charge to exchange money which is pretty steep so go to the ATM.Make sure you write down the taxi driver's cabby license number so you can report him if necessary. We were taken for a ride (over an hour)in Xi'an to drive up the fare from the airport and we were terrified that he would drop us by the side of the empty highway at 10pm.The biggest problem when using the squat potties is the stray puddles of urine. I don't know how women wear sandals! You have to roll up your pants and swing your handbag across your back so it doesn't touch the floor. Most places do have Western style toilets but you have to wait.I did not see any diet drinks anywhere so you have to drink bottled water. The juices are less sweet than in the US but you have to be sure to ask for cold otherwise you will be given room temp. Anything that is imported is the same or more expensive than in the US. Japanese snacks like Pocky are the same price. My friend's suitcase was filled with Lancome cosmetics for her cousin so that is a good gift for hosts. People are very conscious of real brand names and will pay through the nose at the Nike or Adidas store.Lastly, most of the tourists you will see are Chinese, not Western. There is a vast middle and upper and even uber class. Tourist sites are geared to the Chinese not Westerners. There was a Porsche dealer in every city we visited. In August2009, the ten story Superbrands Mall in Shanghai Pudong was packed to the rafters with people shopping at Western priced stores. Malls in the US are half empty.

It was a joy to read this book. I only wished I had know and read about it before my first visit. I laughed several times as I read it remembering some of the troubles that I had during that trip. As they had said in the book, even with these problems, it is still an amazing place to visit. I picked up many pointers that will help me enjoy my next trip even more than the last one. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge of traveling to this wonderful country.

A pleasing work, the writing style is a bit down home and rambling at times but it does prepare a first time traveler for the rough side of what could happen in a new land but always in a gentle and understanding manner. Unlike Troost's sour little book, Lost on Planet China, you will not feel they are out to get you and take you and spit on you while doing it. You will see the Chinese as real people doing their thing and certainly kind and considerate, if you fall within their personal jurisdiction, and sound reasons for cultural differences that mark the land.Much is about the authors' experiences while traveling again and again to the Middle Kingdom, and they conclude with a list of must see recommendations and a fine section on reference work if you wish to go on and understand more about past and present China. If there is a weakness in the work it is the one they warn about in their introduction, last years much less last months notations are already out-of-date. China is in a constant state of flux, things they mention as problems for the traveler have often been dealt with for example ATM machines now accepting foreign cards and a button for instructions in English even in small towns, but because this is China you may need to use the cash deposit machine next over for withdrawal if the ATM rejects your card and forget about reading the web edition of the New York Times, it has fallen off the screen in 2013 after a critical series on leaders' accumulated wealth.Currently still available in Hong Kong, however.

I just finished reading this and closed the book with a satisfying snap. As with all really good to great books, I finished it knowing more, in the case of this book much more, than when I started. This isn't really a book for the young, although some will get good from it. It's a book for those of us who are of a certain age, or, have parents of a certain age and are wrestling with what the means to them, and to us.It is also not a book for devout theists of any flavor. Ehrenreich's atheism is in full view throughout the book.Although not what I would call a consistently uplifting read, I would say that I finished the book with a sense of calm and a far better appreciation for dealing with end of life issues and thoughts that come from the existential nihilism many of feel as we get older in general. I also found it very well written and an easy read (I finished it over a couple of days). Although I wouldn't recommend it to everyone I know (in particular the born-again Christian types, or any other particularly religiously fanatic person), I would recommend it to a majority.Buy the physical version. Read it. Share it with those you love. You won't regret it.

What a treat it was to read this book! I’m not familiar with events at the cellular level in my body, or whatever else is going on in there, as long as it doesn’t hurt. But Ehrenreich makes this understandable, fascinating, funny, and serious at the same time. The book, however, isn’t all about cells. She takes us through a critical look at our health fads and dissects their supposed beneficial benefits. Turns out, you can eat all the kale and seaweed or whatever’s in style right now, but it won’t save you from your eventual death; we’re all going to die, right? Our deaths depend on many things we have no control over, such as cancer, a heart attack, or nuclear war. Ehrenreich also examines our burgeoning “preventive medicine” culture as a huge money-maker for doctors and hospitals, but not necessarily of much benefit to people.I’ve always wondered why death is practically taboo in our culture; it’s treated as something to whisper about and to avoid at all cost. I’ve known lots of people who are scared to death about dying. Why? If you’re religious, you get to live in Heaven for eternity (which doesn’t sound too good to me; wouldn’t it get boring?). Or if you’re not religious, you can imagine nothingness: no pain, heartache, regrets, money issues, etc. Are we so self-centered that we can’t imagine not being alive? The takeaway: enjoy your life while you can, don’t go crazy over food or exercise fads, and go gently into that good night when your time comes.

Wow, what a disappointment. Perhaps my expectations were too high? I acknowledge that I expected a lot from the writer of "Nickel and Dimed", the book that changed my tipping habits in particular and my view of the life of the low-level worker in general. And the subject matter of "Natural Causes" was perfectly in sync with my circumstances: dealing with advancing age and a cancer diagnosis. My situation has been fermenting since early 2017 and by now I've come to the conclusion that my generation, the boomers, are not going to put up with the medical / pharmaceutical / health insurance industry's standard operating procedures. Instead, we were going to take charge of our lives, our healthcare, and the manner of our death. After reading the NY Times review of this book, and hearing the author interviewed in a Slate podcast, I put in my order to Amazon immediately. I was confident I would enjoy reading somebody who was both an excellent writer and with a solid background in science, and whose views about healthcare in later years seemed to parallel my own. My hope was that along with enjoying the book, I'd be provided with arguments I could use in endlessly frustrating discussions with doctors and insurers. (Example of a frustrating discussion: I value quality of life over quantity, but my doctors take the opposite view and plan treatment accordingly. Whose opinion should prevail? Well, whose life is it, anyway?)With my expectations at such a high level, I was all the more unprepared for a laborious, poorly researched and prepared kvetch against the medical establishment that by its weakness made the issues at hand appear overly subjective and self-centered. Barbara Ehrenreich, what has happened to you?If wanting to be in charge of your medical treatment means you are self-centered, I stand guilty. I don't buy into the myth of the doctor as the all-knowing oracle for curing your ills, and that the patient should be a passive partner in the treatment planning process. But I wasn't ready for Ehrenreich's attempt early on in the book to demonize the medical profession, or reject doctors' advice out of hand. Her attitude harks back to man-hating excesses of early-generation feminism as Ehrenreich equates colonoscopies with sexual assault. Or, when she interprets the (always male, she asserts) gynecologist's white jacket as identifying the dominant player in a ritual where the woman receiving a pelvic exam is deliberately positioned in a receptive position. To me this is nonsense, the fantasy of someone who feels victimized by everything and who assigns absurd motivations to her supposed oppressor. In places, this author seems to have lost touch with reality. It doesn't get better. I have no time for new-age homeopathic practitioners, so was surprised to read this Ph D's accusation that after aligning medicine with science in the late 19th century, the profession "won its monopoly over the business of healing" by deriding homeopathy, chiropractic, and other forms of quackery as "pseudoscience." But they are!She dismisses preventive care as mostly a scam, and even though she exercises she condemns striving for fitness as just another example of our culture of narcissism. There are worthwhile arguments to be made against the excesses of medical testing and the false promises of the fitness industry, but Ehrenreich doesn't bother to make them. Instead she merely accuses, and even the logic of her accusations doesn't add up. Her sloppy writing and gratuitous arguments undermine legitimate criticism of these subjects and so do us all a disservice. In similar fashion, she writes off the mindfulness movement to the machinations of Silicon Valley. She accuses the software developers of drumming up the trend toward mindfulness in order to sell mindfulness-related software. How she makes this connection is beyond me. I've worked in tech since the '80s and am aware there are some mindfulness apps out there, but in this multi-billion dollar industry they fail to register on anybody's bottom line, except perhaps those of a few startups. My reading of her attack on Silicon Valley is that she doesn't like the tech industry and is using the mindfulness fad to accuse the industry of manipulation. When so many far more relevant examples are available -- Facebook's use of user data for example -- her mindfulness argument is just silly. Because it loosely ties in with the book's theme she can justify its inclusion. But her argument is at best naive and at worst disingenuous. Our death-denying culture and the industries that profit from it are worthwhile subjects for criticism, and Ehrenreich goes after them. Logically she argues that no matter how hard we exercise, how carefully we eat, how piously we avoid tobacco and alcohol, we nevertheless will end up dead. Healthy living advocates portray age and disease as personal failings that could be avoided if only we were less self-indulgent. Fair ball, but then she goes over the top and accuses "elites" in the upper middle class of depriving working-class people of their justified enjoyment of one of the few activities that reduce their stress level: smoking. Yes, she defends the tobacco industry and criticizes rising cigarette taxes that "hurt the poor and the working class hardest." Once again in this book Ehrenreich demeans valid criticism of the wellness industry by veering off the path of logic and common sense and defending the undefendable. Her screwy logic is used against advocates of immunotherapy, a new approach to cancer that is generating enthusiasm and research -- and in a few cases, amazing success. But no, she argues, utilizing the immune system in the fight against cancer won't work because one cell type in the immune system, the macrophage, can actually switch sides and defend malignant cells from attack. With that single example she rules out an avenue of research that has only recently become viable due to advances in technology and the mapping of the genome. (In another part of the book, she wonders if much of the massive machinery used in medical treatment these days is actually fake, constructed and installed to impress and make compliant the patient.)I don't know what's up with Barbara Ehrenreich, who is now 76. I'm a believer in Billy Wilder's maxim, "You're only as good as the best thing you've ever done." And I can attest that Ehrenreich has done some of the best investigative writing I've read. There's got to be a reason she fails so badly with this book. To get many of her zany accusations into print she must have fought tooth and nail with her publisher and her editor. I'm guessing that her previous successes and her status as a money-making author enabled her to prevail. This book is going to do Ehrenreich's reputation no good, and may even demean some of the good writing she has done in the past. Worse, her lazy and self-gratifying arguments trivialize a major issue facing an aging America: delivery of compassionate, patient-focused healthcare to a large population, the boomers, who have pretty much had things their way so far in life.We boomers are not going to allow our old age to be "medicalized" as Ehrenreich astutely puts it. If treatment is required, we want to know the alternatives and make the final call. This requires on our part a considerable amount of self-education about our affliction, but the internet provides us with legitimate sources of information that enable us to become "informed patients" who have earned the right to engage in a discussion with our doctors, as opposed to listening to a dissertation about what they're going to do to us next. We've earned the right to call a halt to endless rounds of debilitating therapy and go to palliative care. And when that is exhausted, it will be our choice to go to hospice care, preferably in-home, and with the option of assistance from our doctor at the end of life so we don't have to endure intractable pain and needless suffering for weeks or months before we expire.I'm hopeful that my generation will achieve a high quality of life through our senior years, that we'll control our illnesses rather than the other way around, and that we will learn to accept the inevitability of age and death early on, and have the authority to determine the time and manner of our death. The infrastructure is in place but attitudes of all the players need reality adjustments: We boomers must learn to age gracefully, our caregivers must learn to work with us rather than dictate to us, and the medical options as we near life's end -- palliative and hospice based -- need to be funded sufficiently to meet the requirements of our long-lived generation. All these must come to pass, and I am disappointed this acclaimed writer was unable to move the process forward.

I'm a long-time fan of Ehrenreich; but I was disappointed with this book. Unlike Nickeled and Dimed or Bright-Sided, this takes a very big subject, has a very large thesis about it--and fails to deliver. The author excels in finding and debunking frauds and social wrongs--the treatment of poor workers or people on the skids, in particular. But her effort to take on the entire medical establishment and alternative medicine, and even whole philosophical ideas about the nature of ourselves and the world is piecemeal, of course. It falls too quickly into diatribe, substitutes gibes for real reasoning, and fails to avoid logical fallacies. The thesis is a good one, a timely one--but the book does not succeed in its exposition.

My husband and I are about the same age as Ehrenreich. Everyone thinks that if you have excellent insurance you are home free- however that does not prevent doctors from using you as a cash cow or a sa guinea pig for their latest money making office test. She exposes the underbelly of a medical profession that is not as knowledgeable in science as one is led to believe and preys on our fear of death. I got news for you- it's going to happen.A total joy to read- not another 10 ways to live longer crappy book. Liberating.

About the Author

Hi! I am Richard Shepherd a 53 year old South Australian. This is my first book which has taken almost 10 years to write. My Interest in opal was sparked when I was a teen going to school. The explanation of opal formation in science class simply did not make sense. It was from this moment that I decided to do my own research and discover the real truth about opal origins. My research continued on and off all these years, culminating in this book. "The Birth of Opal" reveals both the natural and synthetic processes of opal genesis. It also covers the controversial "Len Cram" method revealing his secret electrolyte. I plan to use the finance raised by "The Birth of Opal" to change careers entering the field of Invention with the goal of producing Green Technology to help save the world, by reducing Global warming. Your support would be greatly appreciated. I am seeking a similar minded person as an investor type business partner, see pg 457 of the book.

I bought this book specifically because he claimed to share the mythical/legendary method that Len Cram uses to synthesize opals in his shed. I've fiddled with the Gilson process on a small scale and was interested in the ion exchange method Cram reportedly used. Well... if the author knows the method he doesn't exactly share it. Dont get me wrong this book is a compendium of knowledge on the subject of opal and had a lot of information compiled together that would take a lot of work to research on your own, but there is very little new information or work in this book. The book covers geography, geology, hydrology, geochemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and some electrochemistry too. It's not a book for casual readers, this attempts to be a serious study of how and why opal is formed.I say attempts because it is suffering from a serious glaring flaw. Young earth creationism. For ducks sake... I'm fine with the argument that opals can form in weeks or months instead of millions of years, that's literally what made me buy the book, an interest in short timescale formation of opal, but that possibility does not negate basic observable facts about the universe. When a fair number of your "scientific" references for this short timescale theory are cited to "Answers in Genesis" or "Creation Magazine" it makes it real hard to take it seriously as a hard science work. Also, at least one reference in the book is cited as a yahooligans page... Come on man, you're supposed to be writing a serious scholarly book here. Also, annoyingly, each chapter is subdivided into single paragraph topics that may interrelate, but as short on details. There is discussion of the hydrology and water chemistry of the opal bearing regions of the world, but no numbers. Tell me there's elevated sulfate and carbonate levels in the groundwater? Great, but are you looking at 10mg/L or 10g/L, and how much of each? This reads in many places like the outline for a four or five book series rather than a standalone reference. Also, the charts, tables, and diagrams throughout the book were TERRIBLE. For the love of all things holy, pay someone at the printing company to check your formatting and graphics. This is by far the worst part of the book. Tables that are nearly illegible and diagrams that are pixelated to hell and back.I mentioned above that I have some experience with the Gilson process for creating synthetic opal. The section of the book where he covers this is... Incomplete. Reading the patent will give you a better in depth look at what is happening and why than this book does. Again it feels like an outline for someone planning to write a book than the finished book. It is someone's notes saying "be sure to mention these topics when you talk about..." rather than "here is the combined sum of human knowledge about this topic".All told, it is a nice collection of information, but by no means is it the definitive work on the formation of opal. It will get you into the ballpark and show you where to start digging for more information, but it isn't a finished product.I'm glad I bought it because serious gemology books are scarce on the ground and it will be a useful collection of references for me to consult later, but it will not be the reference itself. In my opinion this one is doomed to only have one printing. In twenty years I expect people researching opal to see the old ads for this book and asking around for copies because it sounds like it has all the answers they were looking for... but they'll be disappointed even if they do find a copy when many of the references turn out to be websites that were never backed up rather than scholarly journals, books, or the like.

The person it was bought for was very pleased.

Not what it promises to be. Author uses it to advertise his private live rather than delivering promised outcome

Fantastic book, jam packed full of info and references and not one opal picture in the whole how book.*****

Both the United States and the Soviet Union built Plutonium manufacturing plants and their supporting cities. This book talks about the building of these plants, the elite way of life of the scientists and technicians that lived in these cities compared to their other country men, the nuclear accidents and disasters that contaminated the surrounding countrysides, and the long term adverse effects still taking place today.

This book is well-researched and written. It is a rather long read, but the parallels between the US and Russia development of making plutonium for atomic bombs is so interesting. The history of the companies in the US that managed the plant in Hanford, WA is also enlightening. This book depicts a lot of racism and disregard for human life, so that might bother some readers. I still have many pages to read, but feel the book will remain interesting to the end. I highly recommend this book for those that know little about the production of plutonium here in the US and in Russia during the 1940s to early 1950s.

Kate Brown has done the almost impossible, using vast files of information long classified in America and the former USSR to plumb the depths of the secrecy and the cover-ups involved in the pursuit of plutonium for weapons production. While some Americans as well as Russians dispute the accidents and cover-ups, one can only surmise that they were so patriotically blinded by their participation as to deny anything which besmirched their remembrances of the programs and their lives in the secret cities. Some of the evidence, to be sure, is anecdotal, however Brown has managed to document her assertions and is to be commended as a brave historian for attacking an investigation into a part of history that many would wish to remain unknown. Having spent a good part of the past 20 years traveling in Russia and seeing the fear of contemporary Russians that the walls still "have ears" demonstrates the degree of difficulty Brown must have had to gain the confidence of people there in telling this story, not to mention similar challenges in the U.S., particularly among people still residing in and near Hanford.

The production of plutonium is a oft-forgotten piece of the global conflicts which have long shaped multiple societies. In this refreshing inquisitive work, Kate Brown illustrates that the tragedy and ingenuity wrapped up in this colossally dangerous process should never depart from any related narrative. The book carries an activistic tone, but at the same time reliably articulates the histories of two (surprisingly similar) communities, Richland in Washington State, and Ozersk in the Ural mountains. Brown intricately illustrates how, as radiation mutated bodies and landscapes, the production of plutonium mutated cultures.Brown constructs local histories which weave together into an intriguing global tapestry. Well worth reading.

This book is an interesting, illuminating read that details the negligence of American and Russian government nuclear programs and their reckless dumping of radionuclides into unwitting nearby communities. This book does an excellent job documenting how the US and Russian governments "handled" the exposure of their citizens and their various attempts to ignore and bully sick workers and citizens into quiet submission. If you are from an Eastern Washington family and you wonder why half of the people in your family over the age of 50 have had thyroid cancer.... tragically this book might be of interest to you.

I have worked on Hanford issues for 25 years, helping whistleblowers, sick workers, and trying to influence the cleanup to go in a productive direction. I have also been to many of the former Soviet nuclear sites, including Mayak on five different occasions. Kate Brown's book captures not only the history, the stories, and realities, but poses some interesting and insightful perspectives on the two cities and bomb factories. She has pulled together a huge amount of information and distilled it into a readable, interesting book which all of us who live in the nuclear age should read.

I felt sorrow for the thousands of citizens suffering for the cause of paranoia due to the US and Soviet governments. This book and others I have recently read made me realize, as a child of the 1950's, the depth of the deception the US Government displayed.Disappointing in some respects as this book just adds to my distrust of our government. In light of current events, Snowden et.al. this book illustrates how much we need to keep an eye on our (the US Govenment) leaders.

The government doesn't really care about the people's health. They will reward a few contractors and people, turn on the PR machine, but really everyone is cannon fodder.

Although it had some years , It was quite updated and made my trip more enjoyable. Use some internet for updating some info, in case you need it for planning.

Travel guides mention the large cities and restaurants, but this book mentions the interesting side trips with their true taste of Arkansas restaurants and lesser known sights to see. It made our trip very enjoyable.

We travel the back roads of America and never leave home without the "Off The Beaten Path" guides for the states we are traveling. The information is very good and the recomendations are "right on"! Don't leave home without it!
