Excellent tome- must read for someone going into criminal law.
°Art Campbell is that quintessential courtroom lawyer many attorneys aspire to be: A sharp-eyed poet packed inside a ferocious modern gladiator. Fearlessly critiquing the judicial system and his own experiences in and out of the courtroom, Campbell's melodic prose captures the blood, sweat, and tears of a battle-weary soldier, marching ever onward to secure justice for his clients and the greater good of society. Lay people, law students, and seasoned trial lawyers should all drink from Campbell's third--and most revealing--book. Ezekiel E. Cortez, Veteran California Defense Attorney and Freedom Lawyer.°Volume Three of TRIAL AND ERROR vividly captures the middle and later years of a "freedom lawyer." Campbell reveals how citizens get snared by the legal system and how this impacts the client, the lawyer, and society. Campbell shares his commitment to rights enshrined in our Constitution and Bill of Rights-- plus the importance of protecting and defending these rights. Alex Landon, Defense Attorney, former Executive Director of Defenders Inc.°Buckle up! You can't learn this stuff in a law book! At the turn of every page I discovered something that would otherwise take me years of my own trials and errors to understand. More than just courtroom stories, this book makes you reflect on your own life's journey. Thanks to Campbell we can all become better students of life. I want my own to contain as much insight and vigor as he has for practicing and teaching freedom law. Ashley Turner, Law Student. "Read this book on the career of an amazing Freedom Lawyer and he'll show you how important the U.S. Constitution is to all of us. This wonderful book will help you understand law and the world around you, what makes our courts tick, and how to respect and use the law in your own life." Jerry Gerald ("Jerry") Blank, Veteran Solo Practitioner, San Diego.°Through Campbell's stories of wit and irony, I relived many of my own courtroom battles. In this third volume Campbell completes a life-long search to integrate freedom law with his sense of self by confronting his warrior face-to-face. His relentless pursuit of awareness and self-honesty is an exemplar for all of us who search for purpose and integrity in our lives. Both humbling and inspiring, the trilogy of TRIAL AND ERROR is a must-read for all law students and freedom lawyers¡ª and especially for those facing the cross-roads of a career. Nancy Song, veteran Public Defender. In the third book of his trilogy Campbell continues pursuing freedom-law in Washington, D.C., courtrooms, depicting some remarkable struggles. Then he sheaths his sword and enters academia to teach future freedom lawyers. With more time for reflection Campbell makes self-discoveries which alter his life. But he returns to court in San Diego to defend the right of his wife and others to protest nuclear weapons-- a difficult task indeed. Campbell's writing is thoughtful, inspirational, and from the heart. Justin Brooks, Nationally heralded Director of the California Innocence Project. With biting wit and humor, Campbell takes the reader on his journeys defending real people caught inside the cross-hairs of our government. His portrayals are at once heart-wrenching, thrilling, and enlightening. Campbell¡¯s trials remind us that, by protecting the most downtrodden in society, freedom law protects the rights of all Americans. Adriane Bracciale, Defense Attorney. Campbell takes us on a voyage through the criminal courts and the mind of a remarkable trial attorney and legal educator. He reveals not only insights into courtroom strategies but also into human behavior-- what makes attorneys, clients, jurors, and judges tick. Sprinkled with humor, these accounts give readers extraordinarily candid views of what it means to be a lawyer motivated by love of ideals, love of the game, and love of people. Jean Ramirez, Professor of Law. Inspiring! Everyone who seeks truth, justice, and the vindication of the innocent will enjoy and benefit from Campbell's collection of glorious vignettes. The author's brutally truthful accounts shine light on the human factor inside the criminal courtroom and provide valuable guidance to lawyers courageous enough to practice freedom law in the labyrinth of our criminal justice system. Professor Laurence Benner, a former Chief Public Defender and member of the Board of Directors of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association
I feel compelled to write a review about this trilogy of books. When I first laid eyes on the cover of the first volume, I said to myself, "Prose poetry about criminal law? Seriously? This I gotta see!"Wasn't sure what to expect: how does one write poetry about criminal law in a way that could fill an entire book? Would it contain clever limericks? Moral tales? Would it be classic poetry with careful rhymes, or more of an modern piece with unusual punctuation or abstract imagery? Wasn't sure what would wait in those pages, but if someone wrote poetry about a topic like criminal law, there's no way I wasn't going to take a look at what that would be.The first book immediately sucked me in and didn't let me out until I turned the last page. Describing this trilogy is not easy, but I will try.First, the style is closer to prose than to traditional poetry, so there is no rhyming, sing-song, or limericks, or any of what some might expect when they see the word "poem." Instead, it is a rhythmic telling of a series of true tales. You forget you are reading poetry. It feels like pure storytelling. The reader feels rapt, like a young child at story time. The phrasing and tempo traps you into an alternate reality where you become the author (who is the main character) as he journeys from his first experiences in the courtroom through his last major trial.Based on true stories of actual criminal cases and trials, I can safely say that the stories are of the category titled: "You can't make stuff like this up." The writers behind shows like Law & Order could not have come up with a more interesting path through the foibles of human behavior. There are no good guys, no bad guys, no geniuses, no dunces, no villains, and no heroes. There are only people, in all their complicated glory. The characters are complex, authentic, and often humorous. The main character is one we can all relate to. His silent mental "face palms" when he makes a mistake, his ready admission of his weaknesses, and his honest introspection are a joy to read. His victories become the reader's victories. This trilogy does an amazing job of highlighting the fact that nothing in life, the law, or our souls is black or white. All is grey, in all of its gorgeous shades and intensities. The author touches on some pretty deep philosophical exploration of workaholism, ethical dilemmas, love, friendship, poverty, politics, greed, and even global decimation. The author shares a bit about his love of horse riding, and the best way I can describe this trilogy is to say that these books have hoofbeats that carry you with a steady rhythm to the story's end. I can't wait to see if the makers of Law & Order ever create a new series adapted from this book, called "Trial & Error: Tales of Freedom Law." I would tune in for sure.
Trial & Error should be in the back pocket of every lawyer and law student. I'm neither, but, after reading Arthur Campbell's Trial & Error, The Education of a Freedom Lawyer and the previous two volumes, I feel that I have a semester of trial law under my belt. But more important to me is that T&E was just fun to read, full of life's wisdom and insight - "...sword of truth is the only blade that heals as it cuts" - wrapped in a fast moving narrative. This work abounds with alliterations, similes and metaphors. Art combines words in fun ways - "...you're trapped inside an igloo of resentment, but breaking out could bury you inside a blizzard of hostility", "...paddled to the witness chair as if heading up the creek to bag some frogs..." and "...gore your oxymoron".Art's brand of free verse condenses everything to the essentials and keeps things moving along at a good pace; you never feel as though you're getting bogged down in needless info or technical stuff. Read it, learn and enjoy.
