A lot of readers are coming to this book because Lonely Planet Ethiopia says it is the one book to read if one is planning a visit.This is an account of Marsden's travels on foot (with mules and guides) around Northern Ethiopia. He first went to Ethiopia when he was 21 years old, but had to leave because the DERG had made the place too dangerous for young backpackers. He returns to Ethiopia a few times after that, but most of this account is based on the trip he made 21 years after his first trip, when he was 42 years old.As a reader, you get a sense of how tedious and difficult the trip was - constant heat every day, high altitude, interviewing older peasants about their DERG resistance as young men - these are simple people who give him simple answers without any analysis of the role they played. Then there is the Ethiopian food that doesn't agree with him, the immense weariness of the dry season, the semi-starvation of Ethiopian Lent, etc... Marsden is a great prose stylist - he makes a tedious trip interesting, and his research into Ethiopian lore is fascinating - he includes wonderful vignettes on Prester John and The Book of Enoch. Lonely Planet Ethiopia borrowed heavily from this book.The book has the same slow, gracious, almost worn-out pace that I imagine he encountered in many of the people. (NOTE: I am reviewing after reading only 150 pages, and I have not been to Ethiopia myself.) Marsden also does a great job of exploring Ethiopian Christianity, whose believers put a far heavier emphasis on demons and demonic possession than do most western Christians. Mary is heavily venerated in Ethiopia - not at all surprising in an atavistic Christianity full of demons.For a reader in the right mood, this book can take you away to a completely different time and place. But I will say that this is a slowly moving story, and I found it a good book to skip around in. The stories that give the reader a break from the main travel account offer some of the most entertaining reading - check out the part where Emperor Menelik learns to drive.One other thing I will note is that this is not an account of modern Ethiopia today - this book was originally published only a decade ago, but it feels older. There is no description of upscale eco-lodges, or the Aid Parade run amok in Addis Ababa, or the legion of well-meaning white folk descending to take home an Ethiopian orphan. It is just a simple tale of a seemingly endless journey on foot from one church to the next monastery, with a backwards glance at the people he met along the way, and the way in which Marsden remembered them, or let them tell a bit of their own story.

Finally Mr. Marsden returns to Ethiopia and gets to travel to the places denied him on his first visit 20 years ago in his first memoir "A FAR COUNTRY: TRAVELS IN ETHIOPIA (CENTURY TRAVELLERS)". He journeys from Lalibela all the way up to Axum stopping at at a multitude of villages and churches along the way. In typical Marsden fashion, what makes the book a gem is the historical information about the country the he mixes into his memoir; as well as the popular myths and legends surrounding the locations.I'd also highly recommend Marsden's historical biography of Emperor Tewodros, "The Barefoot Emperor: An Ethiopian Tragedy".

Wonderful book to read before my trip to Ethiopia! These are a beautiful people that have had a very hard life.

This book was delivered on timely basis and in good condition. The book is not something that I find to be interesting or eye-opener.

William S. Root (1923–2002) was an American professional bridge player who was also a noted teacher and writer about the game. He was inducted into the American Contract Bridge League Hall of Fame in 1997, and was author of several acclaimed books on bridge, including Commonsense Bidding: The Most Complete Guide to Modern Methods of Standard Bidding and How to Play a Bridge Hand: 12 Easy Chapters to Winning Bridge by America's Premier Teacher.Omar Sharif, an actor best known for his roles in the films Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, and Funny Girl, was considered one of the world's best bridge players. Root's book on play of the hand is the best textbook on the topic. It is one of only three bridge books I recommend. It is written by an American for Americans. The book's organization is fantastic. I've written thousands of pages of instructional material for college students, and I think anyone can learn from studying this book.

The ideas are clear and presented with easy to comprehend examples.No side tracking with high level ideas as many Bridge writers love to do (we know you are a genius, but here we want to learn with our own level)Every idea is presented separately with plenty to examples and a good quiz for each chapter.

A great book for someone wanting to imp0rove their play of a bridge hand. A lot of book for the money.

It's good but it's taking a lot of time to read.

It is understandable and has good problems at the ends of the chapters. A good, generic study book about declarer play.

This book has truly wonderful information but it is NOT EASY by any means, which is what the title and the writeup say. And though stuffed with content, the book is really sketchy and makes you read between the lines. I stopped reading after having a hard time making sense of the first 2-3 chapters. I would say if you haven't been playing seriously for a year, this is likely not the right book for you.

Bob Langert led McDonald's Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability efforts for more than twenty-five years before retiring in 2015. Currently he is a columnist and editor-at-large for the GreenBiz Group and Senior Sustainability Advisor for The Context Network, the premier global and agribusiness consulting firm in advancing agriculture. He has been engaged in social responsibility issues at a global level since the late 1980s, leading environmental affairs, animal welfare, and Ronald McDonald Children's Charities' grants. It is a story of personal, professional, and corporate transformation. It talks about the most effective ways of tackling global threats and challenges, but it is not prescriptive; it’s personal. It includes the insights of a Harvard Business Review article without the sterile academic perspective.Bob Langert, who recently retired from leading McDonald’s CSR and sustainability efforts, was present at the birth of the CSR/sustainability movement. This book is his story. It is also the story of McDonald’s. And it is the story of all of the individuals, non-profits, and issues that influenced both Bob’s and “his company’s” CSR/sustainability journey. It details how CSR and sustainability transitioned from an unanticipated personal passion to a C-suite priority.As Bob tells it, at the time of his first journey into the environmental field, “I was no environmentalist—not yet, anyway.” Instead, he was a rising star at a McDonald’s supplier that sold packaging to McDonald’s and his first environmental job was “to save the polystyrene clamshell.”To anyone who remembers the late 1980s, the battle over how McDonald’s packaged its Big Mac was a watershed moment in the business and environmental communities. Eventually they set out together to explore this strange new world called Everlost. One odd thing they come to realize is that only children live in this afterlife. Something else surprising is that there is a great deal of danger even to the 'dead'.Neal Shusterman has written an engaging story full of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes. This is not simply a YA novel, adults can fall under it's spell just as easily and teens. The story doesn't end on a cliffhanger but I can't imagine not wanting to dive right into the next book in the series.

Nick and Allie died. They don't realize it at first but they are dead. And they haven't got where they were going. They are stuck in Everlost. An in between death. But they aren't alone. Thousands of kids have gotten stuck in Everlost and either sunk to the middle of the Earth or are knit together in groups trying to protect themselves from the true monster of the in between. They try to get home to see their parents but realize that if you aren't in a dead spot you might sink to the middle like hundreds of other kids. Can they get home in a world of quicksand? Can they get themselves out of the pickle they have gotten themselves in? Can they get where they are going? They don't have much to lose. They are already dead.I gave this a three out of five stars on Goodreads. I love Neal Shustermans writing. And I liked the story. I thought the world could have been a bit more developer. I also didn't really connect with the characters. I love his dystopian series "unwind" and I'm hoping the second book turns out better than this first in this paranormal. I was a fun read. I enjoyed it.

As this pair get acquainted with their new afterlife, they stumble across an assortment of villains, horrors, and a bibliophile. Or maybe you could call the bibliophile the "Life After Death for Dummies" superstar author.The characters in this book really fell flat. For someone we spend the majority of the book with (Allie), we really don't get a good feel for her or really step into her character much - and the person who really seems to turn the book around (Nick), we see very little of and don't know him much by the time the book ends. The one character I feel we connected most with, that had the most real emotions coming through were Mary and Vari. We got to see more of their personality instead of being told what it was.The villain in the book seemed... for lack of a better term, nonthreatening. Ugly, very much so. Rude. UH-HUH. Evil?? Nope.It was an easy read, the story moved along, but at times, it really didn't feel like we were doing much. It almost seemed like scenes were put in there just to fill the time. The plot isn't deep, the ending is pretty predictable, and there isn't much to the suspense. I know this is labeled for a younger reader, but I still believe that this could have had a few subplots woven in for the enjoyment of older readers, especially given Shusterman's fan base.One thing that really and truly upset me were the amount of errors found in the book. This is a book put out by one of the biggest publishing houses out there. There is no reason to have as many errors as there are in this book. Self-published authors get slammed on a daily basis because of their lack of editing, and the big houses are putting out books that are entertaining, yes - but also riddled with blatant errors. There were instances of two characters speaking in the same paragraph, commas missing from the end of dialogue, "id" being used instead of "is" and the list goes on.I feel that, especially in a book that is aimed at younger readers, our goal is to show them how English SHOULD be written, not by throwing a popular author's book out there full of errors because the publishing house knows it will sell.I'm giving this book a three-star rating because the storyline was interesting, I was able to finish it, and I wasn't bored to death. However, I will say that I am getting increasingly more angry at the large publishing houses for their lax editing and formatting on their eBooks.As a whole, I am not interested enough in the series to pick up book two. I will, however, be reading book two of his Unwind series (which I thought was brilliant). Everlost is the second book of Shusterman's that I have read, and while I'm not thrilled with it, I haven't given up on him as an author. I want to see what else he has in store for me in his other books. :)

I am 50 years old and recently got a Kindle for my birthday. My 11 year old daughter was reading Everlost at the time, that she checked out from the library. She was so excited by this book and wanted to share every detail with me, but at the same time she wanted me to read it for myself. I am so glad she did! I was absorbed into this story from the beginning. It is written with such detail that you can picture everything the author wants you to "see" in your mind, like it or not. The characters are interesting, well rounded and unique. As soon as I finished Everlost, I jumped right into Everwild, which I love! I am anxiously awaiting Everwind. I can totally see this series of books translate into amazing movies if the characters are handled with the same care that is done in the books. Neal Shusterman is now one of my favorite authors. You will not be disappointed by these books!

My 11-year old daughter loved this series. She couldn't put it down and flew through the books. The plot, from what she tells me, is fairly dark and there is some tragedy throughout but she loved it.

After really enjoying Neal Shusterman's Unwind I decided to try out this book. I'm very glad I did too because its one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. Everlost is grand adventure with many fun twist and turns around every corner. In this sense it reminds me very much of some of the fun stories I used to hear in fairy tales as a kid. Its also very impressive how the author ties up all the loose ends at the end of the book. Every little detail you read about in the beginning comes back around in the end of the book and its really quite amazing, you'll have a hard time putting it down. I would easily recommend this book to anyone. I believe no matter who old or young you are you will enjoy this story.

I love this guy and I love this book! It will change your life...because you will develop such a severe case of post-Heavey that nothing else will satisfy anymore, leaving you scratching through Amazon looking for more Heavey, and eventually angry at the man for only putting out two books! Fortunately he finally discovered the world of Twitter, and once you read this book you will no doubt give him a follow. You might as well just do it now: @bill_heavey.I love to hunt and fish, and I have always loved Heavey's column in Field & Stream- sometimes the only part of the magazine I read- in which he has taught the average American man how, when it comes to the great outdoors, enthusiasm trumps talent. This book will teach you a little about enthusiasm. Generally speaking, I like to be alone in the woods as much as possible and I certainly don't like people enough to care about anything they have to say or offer in a book. Heavey changed my mind. I will probably re-read this in my tree stand this fall (hopefully eating a baggy of pawpaws and smoked herring).

Amazing book. I love everything Heavey writes. But I think this book is my all time favorite. It is a little different from all his others. It has a clear central theme, that I would have thought impossible to make into an entire book. But it also has a rich under tow of human relationships that develop most unexpectedly and dramatically enrich our life experience. I have only re read 2 books in my entire life and am looking forward to fall hunting when I will make this my third. Simply marvelous. Buying 2 more for friend. Bravo Heavey!

I read Bill Heavey's stories in Field & Stream magazine every month. I own his first book which was hilarious and I really enjoyed this book. Bill has a unique way of describing hunting, fishing, and gathering situations unlike anyone else. Rather than simply telling hunting or fishing stories, describing the technical aspects of outdoor sports, or telling stories of trophies caught or harvested, he surrounds himself with unusual characters and brings out the fun and everyday nuances of the outdoors. If he writes another book I will definitely buy it as well.

I am a big fan of Bill Heavey and his F&S column. Bill, isn't it time for another book?

I purchased this book at the same time I purchased Inferno by Dan Brown. After reading a couple chapters of both, I put down Inferno and stuck to Mr. Heavey's book. I found it very entertaining, educational, and a delightful read with endearing use of self-deprecation and personal and family anecdotes. I laughed out loud plenty of times, shed a couple tears of joy in the personal moments shared, and now find myself eagerly waiting for the sequel, to not only further my hunting and gathering skills, but to delight in Mr. Heavey's escapades and to hopefully also read that his personal life continues along the very nice path it has taken. Highly recommend,

great as gift for sportsmen

I didn't expect it to be about food. I only saw the first half of the title. He explores ideas of sustainable food sources from an outdoorsman's perspective. It was educational and amusing in the Heavey way, but I was hoping for more adventure/hunting stories. Either way I like it, and it gave me more reason to like eating sardines. You'll understand when you read it. Thanks Bill.

Just a great book and a great follow up to If You Didn't Bring Jerky...(parts of which I go back and read when I need a laugh or a reality check)Bill Heavey is a great writer.
