I read this in two sittings, if you saw the movie El Cid with Charleston Heston you had a Hollywood history lesson. This book balances the scale and gives the other side of the story. But like all stories you must read all sides so you can make a halfway intelligent assessment of the subject, whatever it is.
I really liked how it said the common folk get oppressed by everyone, but certain rulers were nicer to them. Also the comparison of how they used the land to make it bountiful, or just sold it because they didn't know how to farm! Great insight into the struggles of Lords, cultures, and common folk, :-)
.. to realise the whole scope of the story and bitter sadness of the final days. Also to understand the former political failure of the Arian Visigothic kings and then the religious intolerance that followed the overthrow of the Moors: Spain has rarely been well served by its rulers.
