As a physical therapist, I first started teaching patients classes to augment our therapy so they could find long term relief from their jaw, neck and back pain. I have been passionate about educating patients ever since. I am heartbroken when I work with people, especially teenagers, who have already worn down 60-80% of their jaw joints. There is no good joint replacement. I felt compelled to get this information out to the general public hoping it might ease the suffering and stem the tide of those with irreversible damage and shattered lives. I spent 2 years updating my research to provide the most up to date, research based information I could provide. My website has many helpful tools as well. The book you wish your dentist had read. I wish I'd bought this before spending another $2000 at the dentist trying to correct my jaw pain and headache. Here it is, written by a Physical Therapist and jaw expert, how not to have jaw pain. Did you know there is a right way to chew or swallow, a right place for your tongue and lips? That your dentist with his endless grinding and adjusting and insisting you open wider may be part of the cause of your jaw issues. Don't wait until your jaw locks and there is a serious issue. Author gives clear explanations of how a jaw works, how to protect it, exercises to regain proper alignment, end head aches and neck stress. She uses clear steps, illustrated with photos, resources to find an expert in jaw pain (orofacial dentist/ doctor) classes, PT, craniofacial research. I wish I'd been cared for by a dentist who'd read this book. Possibly the best $16.50 health care resource you will ever obtain and costs a fraction of more dental care.
Suffered from TMJ for 35 years. This is ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT information. She gives you stretches, exercises, trigger points. Anyone who suffers needs to read to adjust habits, correct, and improve. Always been a side sleeper but I now sleep on my back. Different foam ortho pillow, added rolled washcloths into my pillow case to keep my head from rolling, pillow across my mid-section helps me stay on my back, pillow under knees to relieve lower back strain if you need that pillow. Then I found this book!
As someone with extreme TMJ disorder, I have first hand knowledge of what works, what fails, what is a waste of time & money, and what is of value. This book is of value. Excellent insight and understanding, wonderful guides, easy to remember tips, and pathways to becoming pain-free. The chapters on neck stretches and trigger point releases are worth 10X the price of the book. Even with my extensive experience I learned many new and helpful things, like how to arrange my bed for sleeping properly, how to better sit at my desk, why lifting weights was the wrong exercise for me (I clench when I lift so I switched to Pilates,) even more exercises to improve my posture (I am a huge fan of the Egoscue method, too) and so much more. In a world where health care costs are overwhelming and expensive solutions are suspect (and your pain is real and requires your attention) read this book and practice these solutions first. You WILL get better. Thank you Cynthia and God Bless us all.
This book has been a tremendous help for my husband who has been suffering with tinnitus caused by TMJ for over a year. This book is a great resource to us in finding the right treatments.
This is the go-to book for TMJ sufferers. It is superb -- very well written, very comprehensive, and the exercises and stretches are the best of any book on TMJ issues. The expertise of the author is evident, and yet it is written in a manner to be very accessible to the layperson. Too many books recommend exercises that are simply not gentle enough for someone in the throes of TMJ related pain. This book targets exercises and stretches to specific muscles that are gentle, yet very effective. I purchased this book on my Kindle,started doing the exercises right away, and obtained almost immediate relief -- and within three weeks I was almost back to normal. While it may not be a cure-all for everyone, it's a great way to better understand TMJ and to learn how to proactively improve your condition.
This book was an amazing wealth of information. In every chapter, I found information that was relevant to me; problems that I did not even know that I had, such as a tongue thrust and posture issues. Peterson provides exercises and techniques that can be applied immediately. I followed all of her advice and cured my TMJ in about five months! Thank you, Cynthia Peterson!!!
This book was recommended to me by my voice therapist. I have vocal chord dysfunction. It was so informative that I ordered a couple more for family members. The book is very well written and easy to understand. The author also makes it interesting to read and learn. It's not only great if you have TMJ, but I felt like it also was very helpful in dealing with my vocal chord dysfunction. Highly recommend this book.
I have ground my teeth down to so low that I have had to see a specialty dentist and am in the process of getting them rebuilt back up to "normal length" again (very expensive). This book has helped me relax my jaw more. Realize when I am keeping my posture or jaw in a bad place and it has helped my insomnia. It instructs you on exercises you can do based on if you have jaw pain, neck pain or temporal pain (I had the latter the most). It is very useful for anyone struggling with chronic headaches, neck stiffness or jaw pain.
