Ian Falconer, author and illustrator of the Olivia series delivers another fun-filled story about Olivia the pig who embarks on a serious problem, identity crisis. Olivia wants to be independent and under the spotlight as an individual, but her goal has been difficult to reach. Everyone else wants to be a princess, which makes Olivia more depressed, because that's not her dream. Her unique spirit on this quest to simply be who she wants to be is highlighted by fascinating illustrations. The story is laugh-out-loud entertainment as it teaches children to follow their dreams. Enjoyable and Highly Recommended for young children, teachers, and child-care providers!

This book is about Olivia, a piglet who wants to stand out among her friends, and how she goes about doing so. While her mother tries to get her to go to sleep, she comes up with all sorts of ideas of ways to be unique in her princesshood: why not be an African princess, or a Thai princess, or a Chinese princess? Finally Olivia decides that rather than being a princess, she wants to be a queen, and that ends the book.I felt that this book was too short, and the language is pretty sophisticated for its target audience. My goddaughter couldn't sit still while I was reading it, which I took as a sign of boredom with the story. My goddaugher's little friend, who was also listening in, left before I'd even finished the book. What's here is fine, but I thought the story should have further explored ways of being a princess or taking on other roles entirely, as Olivia explored her options. Because of these issues I can only give this work three stars. What's here isn't bad, but there should have been more.

I bought it for the illustrations. I am not so fond of the story. The wording is really slanted more to an adult. Not a good rhyming flow that children love. I make up my own words which works fine for a 2 year old.

Olivia wonders why all the girls, and some boys, want to be princesses and all look the same. Why can't they be Thai princesses, or a princess from China? Olivia figures out what she really wants to be - QUEEN! Cute book. My girls are big fans of Olivia.

This is by far my favorite Olivia book. My daughter loves it, too. There are so many books out there encouraging girls to be princesses and frilly, which is great for the girls who like that. But for those of us with girls who love firetrucks as much as baby dolls, they don't really appeal to us. This is superbly written!! It is all about her trying to find a way to not be like every other girl and be a princess. Her options will make the adult reader laugh more than the kid considering they won't get it, and her ultimate choice is quite clever. I love books that don't talk down to kids, but give them a chance to increase their vocabulary because Olivia speaks very much like an adult. It's witty, creative, encourages independence, and flat out funny. Both my twins, boy/girl, love this book!

This book introduced us to Olivia. I love that pig, and my granddaughters love the stories about her. She's a pig with attitude, not the standard character in a children's book. But Olivia lives and learns, and the girls learn with her. There might even be a few lessons for the grandmas, too!

Yes, so I know 33-year-olds are not necessarily the target market for Olivia, but I am such a huge fan of Olivia's spirited and quirky ways that I pre-ordered this latest book. I expected to roll my eyes a bit at all the princess-y business, but Falconer took a different approach with it, which is - "why does everyone want to be the same?". Olivia is having an identity crisis, because she used to love princesses and pink until everyone else started loving that too. Then, she realized she wanted to be unique, and explores what that means to her.This is not a book to give someone who is princess-mad at the moment. But for someone who is feeling like they stand out, don't know where they fit in, or needs the courage to be themselves, it's a perfect read. Funny, sharply witty and sparklingly Olivia, it's a wonderfully fun book that I've read five or six times now.Don't think that just because it's a kid's book that kids of other ages or grownups wouldn't like it. If you know someone who needs cheering up and encouragement to go ahead and be different, this would make a great gift - a lot better than a card.My favorite part is when Olivia was experimenting with a more stark, modern style. I love how Falconer incorporates interesting cultural references into his book, most of which I'm not familiar with until he shares them. Love it.

A lot of readers are coming to this book because Lonely Planet Ethiopia says it is the one book to read if one is planning a visit.This is an account of Marsden's travels on foot (with mules and guides) around Northern Ethiopia. He first went to Ethiopia when he was 21 years old, but had to leave because the DERG had made the place too dangerous for young backpackers. He returns to Ethiopia a few times after that, but most of this account is based on the trip he made 21 years after his first trip, when he was 42 years old.As a reader, you get a sense of how tedious and difficult the trip was - constant heat every day, high altitude, interviewing older peasants about their DERG resistance as young men - these are simple people who give him simple answers without any analysis of the role they played. Then there is the Ethiopian food that doesn't agree with him, the immense weariness of the dry season, the semi-starvation of Ethiopian Lent, etc... Marsden is a great prose stylist - he makes a tedious trip interesting, and his research into Ethiopian lore is fascinating - he includes wonderful vignettes on Prester John and The Book of Enoch. Lonely Planet Ethiopia borrowed heavily from this book.The book has the same slow, gracious, almost worn-out pace that I imagine he encountered in many of the people. (NOTE: I am reviewing after reading only 150 pages, and I have not been to Ethiopia myself.) Marsden also does a great job of exploring Ethiopian Christianity, whose believers put a far heavier emphasis on demons and demonic possession than do most western Christians. Mary is heavily venerated in Ethiopia - not at all surprising in an atavistic Christianity full of demons.For a reader in the right mood, this book can take you away to a completely different time and place. But I will say that this is a slowly moving story, and I found it a good book to skip around in. The stories that give the reader a break from the main travel account offer some of the most entertaining reading - check out the part where Emperor Menelik learns to drive.One other thing I will note is that this is not an account of modern Ethiopia today - this book was originally published only a decade ago, but it feels older. There is no description of upscale eco-lodges, or the Aid Parade run amok in Addis Ababa, or the legion of well-meaning white folk descending to take home an Ethiopian orphan. It is just a simple tale of a seemingly endless journey on foot from one church to the next monastery, with a backwards glance at the people he met along the way, and the way in which Marsden remembered them, or let them tell a bit of their own story.

Finally Mr. Marsden returns to Ethiopia and gets to travel to the places denied him on his first visit 20 years ago in his first memoir "A FAR COUNTRY: TRAVELS IN ETHIOPIA (CENTURY TRAVELLERS)". He journeys from Lalibela all the way up to Axum stopping at at a multitude of villages and churches along the way. In typical Marsden fashion, what makes the book a gem is the historical information about the country the he mixes into his memoir; as well as the popular myths and legends surrounding the locations.I'd also highly recommend Marsden's historical biography of Emperor Tewodros, "The Barefoot Emperor: An Ethiopian Tragedy".

Wonderful book to read before my trip to Ethiopia! These are a beautiful people that have had a very hard life.

This book was delivered on timely basis and in good condition. The book is not something that I find to be interesting or eye-opener.

William S. Root (1923–2002) was an American professional bridge player who was also a noted teacher and writer about the game. Root's book on play of the hand is the best textbook on the topic. It is one of only three bridge books I recommend. It is written by an American for Americans. The book's organization is fantastic. I've written thousands of pages of instructional material for college students, and I think anyone can learn from studying this book.

The ideas are clear and presented with easy to comprehend examples.No side tracking with high level ideas as many Bridge writers love to do (we know you are a genius, but here we want to learn with our own level)Every idea is presented separately with plenty to examples and a good quiz for each chapter.

A great book for someone wanting to imp0rove their play of a bridge hand. A lot of book for the money.

It's good but it's taking a lot of time to read.

It is understandable and has good problems at the ends of the chapters. A good, generic study book about declarer play.

This book has truly wonderful information but it is NOT EASY by any means, which is what the title and the writeup say. And though stuffed with content, the book is really sketchy and makes you read between the lines. I stopped reading after having a hard time making sense of the first 2-3 chapters. I would say if you haven't been playing seriously for a year, this is likely not the right book for you.

Bob Langert led McDonald's Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability efforts for more than twenty-five years before retiring in 2015. Currently he is a columnist and editor-at-large for the GreenBiz Group and Senior Sustainability Advisor for The Context Network, the premier global and agribusiness consulting firm in advancing agriculture. He has been engaged in social responsibility issues at a global level since the late 1980s, leading environmental affairs, animal welfare, and Ronald McDonald Children's Charities' grants. He was appointed McDonald's first vice president to lead sustainability in 2006 with contributions spanning sustainable fish, coffee, palm oil, beef, packaging, extensive animal welfare progress, and nutrition strategy. It is a story of personal, professional, and corporate transformation. It talks about the most effective ways of tackling global threats and challenges, but it is not prescriptive; it’s personal. It includes the insights of a Harvard Business Review article without the sterile academic perspective.Bob Langert, who recently retired from leading McDonald’s CSR and sustainability efforts, was present at the birth of the CSR/sustainability movement. This book is his story. It is also the story of McDonald’s. And it is the story of all of the individuals, non-profits, and issues that influenced both Bob’s and “his company’s” CSR/sustainability journey. It details how CSR and sustainability transitioned from an unanticipated personal passion to a C-suite priority.As Bob tells it, at the time of his first journey into the environmental field, “I was no environmentalist—not yet, anyway.” Instead, he was a rising star at a McDonald’s supplier that sold packaging to McDonald’s and his first environmental job was “to save the polystyrene clamshell.”To anyone who remembers the late 1980s, the battle over how McDonald’s packaged its Big Mac was a watershed moment in the business and environmental communities. It was very interesting to read about Bob Langert's journey and his integral role in McDonald's adding sustainability as the fourth key element to what they stands for. I enjoyed the great stories and lessons learned about the importance of collaboration, commitment, and the persistence required for success.

Not only is Langert an accomplished corporate sustainability executive but he is also a fabulous writer/storyteller. He tells these stories with such enthusiasm. It is apparent that he is very passionate about his work at McDonalds.
