About the Author

Regine Stokke began to blog about her day-to-day life shortly after she was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008. Regine’s stated purpose with her posts was to give people a sense of "what it's like to live with" such a serious illness, and her blog became an almost instant classic. It was first adapted into book form in 2010, and became a bestseller in Norway. Regine was also a very gifted photographer, and had her photos exhibited at both the 2009 and 2010 Nordic Light photography festivals in Kristiansund.Henriette Larsen (translator) grew up in Switzerland and the U.S. speaking Norwegian at home. She has fond memories of beautiful summers (but no winters) in Norway. She earned a Bachelor's degree in French Literature from Pomona College and completed graduate coursework in French and Comparative Literature at SFSU. Henriette lives in San Francisco.

This was a wonderful book to read about the journey Regine had gone through with this terrible cancer disease. It's tragic she had live such a short life. She had so much to offer and she did with this book. I've lost two relatives two cancer and on their memory I've made a commitment in their memory to being a registered bone marrow donor. It's true that only the best flowers are picked first. She indeed was a beautiful flower...may she rest in peace...

How strong this young lady was. Heart breaking, but yet makes one realize, what one can accomplish, by having a positive attitude. Unbelievable courage, for someone as young as she. Couldn't put the book down, until I got to all the notes people put on her blog. There are to many, and gets boring, trying to read them all. That is why I gave it four stars.

I would reccommend these sellers. They were quick about getting books out. the books were all in shape described. very very satisfied with their service and look for them in the future for other purchases.

Very personal sounding narrative, written in a very engaging style. Heart rending story, but the grace and acceptance are remarkable.

This book was totally amazing, I am so sorry to Regines families loss, what an amazing, strong and beautiful young lady you raised...

When I picked up `Regine's Book' I know that it was nonfiction and, for the most part, written by a girl who'd died of cancer. If you're like me, then you're asking yourself: "why read a book when you know it will make you cry?" I answered myself "because when I die, I want to leave something meaningful behind for the world...so how dare I ignore what this young woman left?" What an experience I had! Regine was honest, sometimes harsh, and always someone you'll wish you'd gotten the chance to know. I dislike most fiction involving disease and death: so often, the authors tend to rely on melodrama or try to push their religious opinions. This true story is so different, and by far the best way for literature to deal with diseases like cancer. Real people, not characters designed for sympathy, who you might have known, or passed at a bus stop, with human frustrations and complaints, and strengths that rival the greatest fictional heroes...they are the ones to laugh with, cry for, and be inspired by. I started crying almost too hard to keep reading towards the end of `Regine's Book', but it was worth it to have, to some extent, gotten to know her. I was filled with a determination to live life to the fullest, and an appreciation for the human spirit. I was also staggered at what a good writer Regine was. There are many adult authors - darn good ones - who'd have a hard time matching her for flow, style, and expression. She was also an incredible photographer, and you'll get to see many of her beautiful photographs in the book. Please, experience `Regine's Book' - you are missing so much, too much, if you don't.

I was so in love with this book at first. The dynamic father-daughter relationship of Wavy and Kellen is heartwarming. As Wavy grows and is protected by Kellen, the reader begins to thing of him just as Wavy did — her protective “gentle giant”. Unfortunately, the author took her opportunity to turn this into a truly amazing “who are we to judge love?” book, and instead turned it into pedophendllia. Love was what drove the reader to smile when little Wavy hugged Kellen, but disgust is what makes the reader shiver when a 28 year old man talks about a 12 year olds boobs. This book is not one that pushes your thinking, that makes relatives uncomfortable at thanksgiving with differing opinions, this is a disgusting book of the grooming of a virtual sex slave, and makes readers uncomfortable for all the wrong reasons. We root for Kellen at first, the author twisting our mindsets into thinking it’s nothing more than platonic, and when it suddenly turns sexual, we are not as disturbed as we should be. A man “marrying” a 13 year old is a molester, not the hero he is depicted as

Do not buy this book. I have never written a review before but this book was so disgusting I feel compelled to warn people. If I could give it 0 stars I would.Is it well written? Yes. For someone who condones pedophilia. I only read to the end because I couldn’t believe that a book so popular wouldn’t end with the victim living a life far from her abuser. I was wrong. Not sorry for spoiling the ending. I can’t believe Amazon is even willing to sell this. It seems like it should be sold by some secret NAMBLA website to justify a man’s sexual relationship with a 13 year old (though the inappropriate activity starts even younger). I am not a prude. Consider myself a liberal feminist (so not some conservative who believes in censorship) but this is awful.I myself wish I had read more of the reviews before I purchased this book and didn’t go by the overall star rating. I’m disappointed with my fellow readers for rating it so highly. I’m about to read “A Handmaids Tale” and feel like I’ll be less disturbed.

I couldn't even finish this book. This seems like a book a pedophile would love. The relationship between a child and adult should never be like the one that is described. I can't believe with all that's going on in the world right now and the new awareness of victims that this book receives such great reviews. It is alarming.I'm not a huge trigger warning guy unless I think something really warrants a trigger warning but here is one for ya: victims of assault, especially for adults that endured it as a child, read with caution.

I literally had to walk away from this a few times because the relationship was too disturbing. Are we really supposed to be moved by their happy ever after? I don't care if this is dirt poor meth-labville, Oklahoma. I don't care if these relationships actually happen. I can't get OK with tying up in a big pretty bow in the end. I was never rooting for them, I didnt see the 'romantic', I saw a lot of needing therapy. A happy ever after would be that she got out of that gutter, did great in school, moved on, had a life of age appropriate relationships, and succeeded despite her past.

I had to finish this book, at the expense of everything else in my life. I could not put it down. Is it sad? Yes. Is it disturbing? Yes. Does it hit you in the feels? Yes. The whole premise should be off-limits, but strangely, it's not. It's so well written and so compelling that you can't help but be drawn into this world. No child should be cursed with parents like that, my heart broke for her. Wavy finds some comfort in this stranger, the only person in her life that is looking out for her and her brother. Is this whole relationship wrong? Perhaps, but he is broken as well. Read it and make your decisions.

I have heard so many good and bad things about this book! After reading a review I just knew this book wasn't for me. After hearing good things about this book from several book friends I was still not reading. But one day I went on NetGalley, after being in a horrible funk and requested to review. I had this book on my iPad for the longest time and I finally read 4 days before its release. At the 40% mark I found myself NOT hating this book like I thought I would.This book was so different than what I was expecting. Granted the whole falling in love while she was a minor was rough for me. Several times I kept saying she's a child stop but I also felt their connection. What kind of person does this make me?! Several times I would say aww how sweet but then I remembered Wavy was just a child!!!This book isn't for everyone and lord knows I didn't think I would like it but I did. Even though there are some uneasy scenes in this book, the whole book wasn't based on their taboo relationship. Wavy and her brother, Donal suffered tragedy after tragedy. No kids should have gone through what they did. Every time things got a little better the rug would get pulled from under them.This book truly does show all the ugly and wonderful things in life. The story was one of a kind and I couldn't stop reading. The writing was excellent. I would have given it 5 stars but the messing around while she was a minor wasn't cool. This story will definitely stay with me for a long time. I'm happy I forced myself way outside my comfort zone and read this story. I look forward to reading more works from this author.4.5 Stars

I came across this book by the recommendation of the author Daniel Pinchbeck. Published in the “Forerunners: Ideas First” series of short books from the University of Minnesota Press, it’s exceedingly approachable—well shy of 100 pages. In blockchain-time, one might consider it archaic, coming from the generation of yore: 2016—although it remains as cogent and timely as ever. David Golumbia is a professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University, and text comes across as academic in nature, with countless citations.Before diving into the meat of the subject, I offer the caveat that both the book, and this review, focus primarily on the Bitcoin community, and less so on the blockchain space in general. As the dominant incumbent and original blockchain pioneer, Bitcoin is understandably more conservative than many of the newer blockchain upstarts, to which I don’t give attention in this missive.As the subtitle broadcasts, the thesis of the book is that Bitcoin is an instrument of right-wing extremism. Having been a participant in the blockchain space for the past year-and-a-half, it comes as no surprise to me that academics find the movement generally right-wing. The cypherpunk movement that birthed the blockchain community is firmly libertarian.The last two sentences of the book aptly sum up Golumbia’s arguments:"Recent events have shown repeatedly that we discount the power of engineers and/or ideologies to realize their political visions through software design at our peril. What is required to combat that power is not more wars between algorithmic platforms and individuals who see themselves as above politics, but a reassertion of the political power that the blockchain is specifically constructed to dismantle." (Page 76)The relationship between money, markets, and the state are at the heart of Golumbia’s explorations. Does government enhance or curtail freedom? Whereas the left would suggest the former, the right sides with the latter."The cyberlibertarian belief that ‘governments should not regulate the internet’ really makes sense only if it is true that government exists to curtail rather than to promote human freedom. Yet in most non-rightist political theory, government exists in no small part to promote human freedom.” (page 6)Golumbia supports this argument that the blockchain community is dominated by right-wing discourse with ample evidence. He then moves on to an exploration of inflation and store of value. During my entire time in the blockchain space, I’ve repeatedly needed to remind people that inflation is defined by prices. Milton Friedman’s unrealistic claims that inflation is driven by supply are rife throughout the space, and Golumbia’s research helps put my daily experience into a larger political perspective.“From the farthest reaches of the explicit anarcho-capitalist fringe…to the supposedly responsible mainstream, we find the same insistence on the monetary nature of inflation and the concomitant immunity of Bitcoin to inflation due to its limited total supply.” (page 19)Neither economic history, nor Bitcoin’s extreme volatility, support such claims. Bitcoin has gone through regular and periodic cycles of 5x inflation (hyperinflation). Limited supply does not guarantee high prices.On this thread, beyond a few asides about the concentration of Bitcoin holdings, Golumbia fails to explore the effects of constrained-supply on wealth inequality. When token architectures can only raise funds for their capitalization via regressive and severely limited token supplies that offer the chance of 10x, 100x, or 1000x returns for initial investors or participants, the demographic results are that Crypto Valley makes Silicon Valley look like an egalitarian utopia. It almost goes without saying that extreme wealth inequality is generally associated with right-wing sympathies.This brings us to the conspiracy theories surrounding the Federal Reserve, and monetary cosmology.“Bitcoin is obviously built to escape the kind of regulation the Federal Reserve exerts over…’money supply regulation’…, yet this is frequently taken to mean that it somehow inherently escapes…’legal regulation.’” (pages 37-38)Golumbia dissects the intermingled meanings of the term “regulation.” On the one hand, it relates to value, and on the other, legality. Golumbia is right to assert that the space often conflates the two. This likely ties back to the revolutionary outlook of many crypto enthusiasts; they’re as concerned about the Fed influencing value as they are about the SEC regulating issuance.One of the recurrent conversations in the space regards the role of the state, not only with regard to cryptocurrency regulation, but more broadly. I regularly hear questions like, “are we headed for a state-less future?” My assumption is, no, we’re not. But opinions, aside Golumbia raises an important part about the definition of money. Many crypto enthusiasts regularly refer to and aspire to have Bitcoin and other tokens treated as “money.” And yet, according to Modern Monetary Theory, money is defined by its issuance by a sovereign government.“Nation-state sovereignty and the very idea of money are inextricably linked in our world, and so the notion of money that is not issued by a nation-state is essentially a contradiction.” (page 54)In other words, cryptocurrency could be money or could be decentralized, but not both. In some ways, this is a semantic conversation, but it gets to some of the heart of blockchain ethics and political theory—are decentralization and democracy compatible? And when I say democracy, I’m not referring to the deeply compromised situation we currently find ourselves in here in the US, but in the aspirational sense of the word used by David Graeber (in his book, “The Democracy Project,”) and Astra Taylor (in her documentary, “What is Democracy?").And this brings us around to Golumbia’s concluding thoughts regarding politics and technology, and their tenuous relationship:“Bitcoin and the blockchain do a remarkable job of reinforcing the view that the entire global history of political thought and action…has already been jettisoned through the introduction of any number of digital technologies.” (page 74)“It is hard to see how this [non-right] minority can resist the political values that are very literally coded into the software itself.” (page 75)The CEO at my blockchain startup, Gregory Landua, recently read Anand Giridharadas’ “Winner Take All,” and commented that it brought the necessity of government into the forefront for him. Corporate tyranny is already beginning to overpower government tyranny, and, however much we might despise the fact, the state continues to be the best instrument we have to mitigate the abuses of power rife within our current global corporatocracy.Although Gulmbia has deftly performed the task of convincing us of his assertion that the blockchain space is dominated by right-wing rhetoric, he leaves it up to us to determine the more important question: do we care? I can attest from personal experience that many members of the blockchain community are deeply disenchanted with the both the content and tone of political discourse on both the right and the left. Without noticing, does that de facto mean we’re inheriting the conservative biases of our forefathers in economically liberal communities? Within a community so set on transforming the world, can we afford such naïvete? These are the questions Golumbia leaves us with, and questions that merit significant cogitation.

Forget the past stated claims that Bitcoin is only used by slackers living in their mother's basement and masterbating to anime. The enlightenment is here. Bitcoin is the result of right wing conspiracy theorists and extremists that reject the saintly and profound conclusions that legacy financial systems have blessed us with.Inflation is good for the economy and reckless central banks do not steal value by carelessly printing more and more money. The author offers no rationale for this claim and cites few direct sources. The author also ignores the dubious orgions of the Federal Reserve and totally ignores its fallacy.If there is an lucid and articulate argument against Bitoin, this is not it. This paranoid work belongs in the dust bin along with the other misadventures of the legacy monitary systems.

Just an outstanding and very readable explanation of the ways in which Bitcoin misses the mark, both in concept and in execution, and rests on faulty assumptions about how currency can and should work.

This book provides some interesting insights by placing Bitcoin in the modern American political context. It correctly cites some important ideological predecessors which may not be so obvious such as Hayak, Friedman, Rothbard, Cyberlibertarians, Cypherpunks, and Crypto Anarchists. However, his conclusion only makes sense when viewed from the very narrow lens of modern American politics. This may be done on purpose, but it is an inherently flawed way of looking at a technology which has gone global. For example, the author often mistakenly equates "anti-government" as being strictly a right wing ideology but this is incorrect (i.e, in the 60's , being "anti-government" was a left wing thing).Any time the author mentions "central banking", he seems to only be referring to the "US Federal Reserve" as if that was the only central bank in the world. The fact is that many central banks have failed in the past, and is failing today (see Venezuela). That is not a leftist or rightist position, that is just reality. He also makes a huge and inexcusable omission of the 2008 financial crisis and the Occupy movement under which Bitcoin was created from. This omission is intellectually dishonest as the Occupy movement and "too big to fail" are leftist movements that parallels Bitcoin's development. In summary, the author's thesis is incorrect and over simplified. Even if he was correct, the viewpoint is so narrow (looking at Bitcoin in the current American political context) that his analysis has limited use.

For in Kelly's hands the unadorned naming of tree species--sweet bay, black gum, longleaf pine, water oak--is like music; he wrings an entire visual landscape from something as simple as ``a mixed stand of 50-year-old pine and hardwood with a closed crown.'' There is much more: forays into the history of American lumbering, a passing note on lid drinkers (those who chuck the cap after opening the bottle), why there were so few artillerymen in the artillery, the finer qualities of the Atlantic white cedar, the contours of the southern US sawmill business, the joys of being an official remittance man. Tom Kelly is an extremely entertaining writer- usually about Turkey hunting but this is a wonderful book about a homebuilt skiff.

Tom Kelly's the best all around. Even if you don't particularly enjoy turkey hunting or the outdoors, you will appreciate his work. "The Boat", as with all else he has written, is the kind of stuff that makes you want to take a trip to Spanish Fort, AL just to shake his hand.

While I accidentally happened upon this book during a search on bodybuilding, it was a great find for boat lovers and boat builders. It has very little to do with boatbuilding and lots to do with the south, lumber industry, people and how people are attracted to and influenced by boats. Bryanna Plog is an inspiring writer and thinker. She writes sensitively about her experiences in other cultures and adventures as (mostly) a young woman on her own exploring the world. She is not a tourist, but a traveler and world citizen. She does a remarkable job of sharing her insights gained from being on the ground, immersed in the local cultures she visits, trying new activities, foods, and cultural practices. She ponders the effects of her presence on those around her, and tries to minimize negative impacts of her visits. And she will sometimes go to remarkable lengths to experience the local culture through getting to know individuals as people wherever she goes. An easy read that sets one's mind spinning with ideas and reflection on one's role in the world. Also filled with humorous insights and great character vignettes.

Bryanna shares her travels in many intriguing places across the globe along with advice for would be travelers. Many of the places she visits are unusual and she tells how to get a native's insights into these fascinating places.

A very fun and enjoyable read. The author is gifted at showing you the places she has been as seen through her eyes. Thankfully, she leaves the oh so serious business of travel writing to others and just lets her own personality shine through her writing. The book pokes gentle fun at some formal lists of do's and don'ts given as travel advice while showcasing her experiences as a traveler. Her viewpoint is somewhat different than that of the typical American traveler, and she is to be commended for going her own way.Highly recommended.

What a delightful read!I think everyone who travels, or has traveled, abroad has had their share of sound or unwarranted/unrealistic advice. I plan on recommending this to my students before their study abroad year

It was interesting as far as it went.

Recommended summer reading. You don't have to be a world traveler to appreciate the entertaining and descriptive stories the author gifts us with. We should be so fortunate to have half as many experiences as shared here! Stories gained and lessons earned (and learned) through travel are worthy as applied life lessons and shouldn't be earmarked as quaint anecdotes to tell to pass the time. This book leads us through a fun collection of short tales that ask: How has the road you have traveled affect the path you are yet to find?

I enjoyed reading about the author's various travel experiences. Having traveled to some of the same countries, I could definitely identify with her stories. Her humor, descriptive scenes and travel advice allowed me to also "experience" those places that I have not yet visited. Great read!

I read this book during some journeys of my own and it made a great traveling companion. Full of short, fun stories from adventures around the world, Make Sure You Have a Map makes you smile and want to get out and see more of the world.

This book is beautiful. It can act as even a coffee table book the photography is so incredible. Recipes are great- every one I've tried has been delicious and unique.

`Gourmet's America' is one of two different types of recipe collection books put out by `Gourmet'. This is a special theme volume. The other variety is the yearly `best of' collection which features the cuisine of a major world city such as Paris, Rome, or San Francisco. The best feature of both types of volumes is their presentation of recipes as complete, themed meals which make the whole series of collections a great source for people who really love to entertain based on a culinary theme.This volume's themes are principle American regions such as New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the South, the Heartland, the Mountain states, the Southwest, California and Hawaii, and the Northwest and Alaska. Unfortunately, these regions are so big that any reasonably cohesive menu from, for example, the Mid-Atlantic states will represent only a miniscule portion of that region's cooking. For example, a Pittsburgh based Polish menu would be totally foreign to a Baltimore crabfest.I can't argue with the recipes, however. I checked out the ones from the region I know best (the same Middle Atlantic states) and found good to superior renditions of what happened to be very close to a Pennsylvania Dutch themed collection.I still have the problem with the fact that if what you want is a good source of American cookery, for $25, you can get a spanking new copy of James Beard's magnum opus, `James Beard's American Cookery', with upwards of 3000 recipes, very nicely organized by occasion and ingredient.I also detected a certain absence of features which seemed to arrive at Gourmet when Madame Ruth Reichl took over the reins at `Gourmet'. There is no `make ahead' schedule so useful for `do it yourself' entertaining. I don't know if Ruthie was personally responsible for adding that feature, but I do sense the `Gourmet' volumes done in the last five years seem to be just a bit better than in previous years.

I have read almost all of Dr. Fukuyama's books and recommended several of them to friends and associates. I looked forward for months the publication of "Identity." Ultimately I found it unsatisfactory.On a positive note Dr. Fukuyama's ability to set context once again is a strong foundation. He starts with the Greeks and works his way to the present. His description of the evolution of thought is an education by itself. (Not to mention that anyone who has read "Snow Crash " gets a special place in my heart.) Rather than, as most reviewers do, give you a synopsis (I will leave that to others) I will focus on my misgivings.1. A central theme is the human need to be valued. This need to be valued is intrinsic. But there is a difference between being valued and narcissism. Dr. Fukuyama does not help me understand where valuing you when you are deluded about your self worth plays into a creedal society.2. Dr. Fukuyama speaks about diversity in traditional liberal (as in leftist) terms - race, creed, gender, etc. What was missing for me was the value of "diversity." Will I somehow be a better person and citizen if I have to read 100 illiterate and meaningless authors to tick the diversity box before I can read a second Fukuyama? I wholeheartedly disagree that meaningless prattle becomes inherently meaningful because of the race, religion, gender, national origin or learned experience of the author. I would have expected Dr. Fukuyama to rail against such identities but he does not.3. Dr. Fukuyama speaks to inequality of economic success and appears to favor redistribution. This flies in the face of, and stomps heavily on, the concept of property rights - a fundamental attribute of the U.S. Constitution. It does not matter to me if it is a King, a dictator, or a "liberal democracy" when they appropriate my private property for some egalitarian "public good" I am going to resent those who benefit from the fruits of my labor. The governmentization of private charity has turned a positive social good into a negative evil. This area is not addressed as part of the fracture of society into interest groups.4. Dr. Fukuyama does not discuss merit other than in the context of the earliest warrior class except to note that the general population seems to have substituted vacuous celebrity for the prior principles of honor, service and sacrifice. If everyone is self-actualizing their self aggrandizement why is this surprising? We have a old fashioned word for this: selfish.4. Finally a note about President Trump. Given Dr. Fukuyama's public dislike for the President I expected him to go off the deep end as has Stephen Pinker ("Enlightenment Now".) He does not. But where I hoped for more insight was in "the road not taken." Most of us (projecting the Universe (Multiverse) from a sample of one) are not engaged on a daily basis with the arc of history. My favorite analogy for political action is a pendulum. As an issue swings to an extreme more and more people are driven from their lethargy and become active participants. But the pendulum has to swing. Both Dr. Fukuyama and Michael Porter ("Competitive Advantage") point to the negative impact of the continuation of policies and institutions that have long outlived their usefulness. President Trump is a disruptor of the status quo. Both Dr. Fukuyama and I agree that the status quo seems to be in the direction of a retreat of liberal democracy. Maybe a little disruption is a good thing. Which is not to suggest that I approve of the President's antics.On a personal note: I am retired and live alone on a sailboat. I have spent the last 9 years traveling all over the world. I have immense personal time and usually spend 3 to 4 hours a day reading and taking online courses during which time I am required to pet my very demanding cat XO. I find that the descriptions of the "right" are totally foreign to my personal experience of people in the United States. I don't identify with the "right" as described nor do I identify with the "left." I honestly don't know who these people are. In a multidimensional space we need more than a linear description.*(new) According to Gallup in 2017 42% of Americans identified as "Independent", 29% as Democrats, 27% as Republicans. So what are "Independents?" Left, Right, Up, Down, Charmed, Strange? (Inside joke for quantum theory proponents.) Their viewpoint appears to be ignored by Dr. Fukuyama. Yet they are the plurality of Americans.***********************************Update September 30, 2018 (with minor updates to the above for clarity)Having read "Identity" for a second time and other's reviews I have finally realized what has been really bothering me. The "story" falls flat. The final chapter is a bromide of "what should be." There is no "getting to Denmark." It is clear to me (but apparently not Dr. Fukuyama) that the 4th Estate is both a significant cause of identity politics and a possible positive force for creating a more creedal society. Their daily broadside of identity politics validates those who would see the society fractured into smaller and smaller interest groups. This may get "clicks" but is detrimental to society as a whole. How does one convince them to change their behavior?Dr. Fukuyama speaks to a number of potential policy changes that in his opinion could move us in the right direction. But policy change requires elucidation of the rationale and persuasion of the need for change. The "Federalist Papers" weren't written because the Founders had a lot of spare time. (Equal time - nor were the Anti-Federalist Papers.)My three star rating should not imply that reading this book is an unworthy use of time. (I have, for example, read it twice so far.) In Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment, Stanford political scientist Francis Fukuyama presents an impressively well-reasoned and lucid explanation of the phenomenon of identity politics, which is being increasingly recognized as a powerful force within the United States and world-wide. Although he acknowledges in the Preface that the 2016 U S presidential election was the inspiration for the book, Identity goes far beyond an analysis of the last election or similar phenomena like the Brexit vote. The scope of the book is summed up well in the aptly-chosen subtitle: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment. Fukuyama is a scholar and deep thinker, and he traces the origins of identity politics back to its roots both historical and psychological. As he explains it, identity politics begins with thymos, a basic human desire for dignity and recognition of an individual’s worth, which creates resentment if an individual feels disrespected. The modern concept of identity has changed over the past few centuries, though, under the influence of thinkers like Martin Luther, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and others. As society has become modern and complex, people have felt their identities more repressed and value their inner selves more. And as modern society has developed, people increasingly began to believe that dignity is something that all people deserve, and not just a narrow class. When large numbers of people sense they are not being accorded that dignity, various forms of unrest develop. Some are positive and productive, and some are not, and Fukuyama presents a number of excellent examples, such as the Arab Spring that was touched off when a Tunisian policewoman slapped a street vendor. If people cannot feel respected for themselves alone, they can look for respect by virtue of membership in a group, be it ethnic, religious, or class, and it is this push for respect by virtue of group identity that is being noted in many ways today, whether it is the tribal antipathies in Africa, anti-immigrant feelings in many countries, or requests for ethnic-focused dorms on college campuses. Although we tend to note negative results of people’s quest for dignity and respect, Fukuyama says “that the demand for dignity should somehow disappear is neither possible nor desirable”. Ultimately, if I may oversimplify a much more sophisticated conclusion, Fukuyama calls for a broadening of the sense of identity based on a commitment to liberal democratic principles as a solution to many ills.Identity is definitely the best non-fiction book I have read in a very long time. It is disturbing, enlightening, and convincing; to me it also appeared very objective if approached with an open mind, although I suspect it will offend hardliners in both the liberal and conservative camps. His thesis is sophisticated, but the book is very readable, and his ultimate conclusion is positive: “Identity can be used to divide, but it can and has also been used to integrate. That in the end will be the remedy for the populist politics of the present.”My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance review copy of this book.

As an acknowledged “middle aged white guy” who has been been trying to better understand “the race” issue through self reflection, reading material written by other who don’t look like me or have wildly different understanding of the American experience, I found this book to be insightful and likely to ruffle the feathers of the far left and far right. I think the author has a historically solid foundation for his work and provides excellent insight about how dignity and identify are impacting our politics and likely to impact the future if not managed well. Well worth my time and money.

Facts, sound arguments, detailed evidence, solution focused, fair and balanced. Brilliant! Can't tell if the author is "left" or "right". What is clear is that he is interested in the good of the whole, understands left and right limits, and is a true American in the truest sense of the word.
