*sigh*This is a Nora Roberts, so of course I bought and read it—or tried to. Many people I’m sure do the same, and that’s why Roberts can afford to toss out this kind of crap. Brand recognition is priceless in marketing.Roberts wrote this story years ago, except it was titled Montana Sky, and it was so much better.Let me tell you what happened the first quarter—or “part” as Roberts likes to section it unnecessarily. We jump back and forth from past to present between a young woman who was abducted and forced to experience unspeakable horrors—I mean, been there, done that, in Roberts’ books alone—and the heroine, who does the most truly fascinating thing I’ve ever read—she goes through her morning routine, then goes to work, puts together agendas, and attends meetings.Yeah. Seriously. This book was so boring that at one point, maybe about a third of the way through, I got sick of spacing off and having to reread passages that I just shook my head and started flipping through pages, trying to find something exciting or even just interesting. So many scenes were irrelevant to any plot, whether it was the thriller or the romances. Some scenes were fluffy bits of nonsense with one important line thrown in. What a tangled, tedious mess of tones and points of view. Just a mess.I knew Bo and Cal were supposed to be the main characters, but honestly, this wasn’t their book. If it was anyone’s, it was Alice’s, though we got to spend time with just about everyone, which annoyed the crap out of me. There was no focus. The book wanted to be too many things at once, and ultimately didn’t manage any of them. I didn’t care about the characters. Cal’s horse, Sundown, had more personality than he and Bo combined. And “Bodine Longbow”? Really? Did Roberts find a name generator website, select the categories of ‘hick’ and ‘western,’ and go with the first random name it threw at her? She’s used the name Bodine in at least two other books (Carolina Moon and Born in Shame, though in the former it was spelled “Bodeen”).(Apologies to anyone named Bodine Longbow.)It was just such a retread of many of Roberts' books. The Bodine name, a ranch in Montana, all the siblings in the same family falling in love at the same time, a religious fanatic villain who takes the Bible literally, a not-so-unexpected family connection to the villain (I suspected him the moment I met him), and an obvious misdirect. There was even a wedding and the planning thereof. It's not identical to Montana Sky or any other book, but it's far too similar for its own good.So yeah, I didn’t read the whole thing; I just read the parts that included Alice, because she was the most interesting character out of the lot, the only one with an arc. And honestly, I don’t feel I missed anything. To be fair, though, the writing style was pretty good, even if the story crafted in that style was crap. Roberts is exceptionally talented—if only she would write a story that isn’t a waste of her time and ours. If I had any complaints about the writing itself, it would be that there wasn’t enough action or physical description with dialogue, like mannerisms or facial expressions. We were largely left to assume the tone implied, and sometimes I had to stop and puzzle over the nuances within a conversation. If you aren’t accustomed to how Roberts speaks/writes, you might get confused.noapologybookreviews.com

Nora Roberts is my favorite author and I am shocked to find I just could not get through this book. The only character I could really connect with was Alice and her story is so dark it is overwhelming. I know very bad things happen every day, but I read to get away from everyday life for a while, I do not expect to end up sicken and depressed especially from a Nora book. This is my last Nora pre-purchase, I will read a sample before buying from now on.

I usually love Nora Roberts, but this is not one of her best. The positive: as she always does, she created an intricately detailed world, with well-developed characters. Unfortunately it's one she's created before. The negative: it dragged on and on and on. And the predictable ending was... hurried, poorly described, and improbable. Too many subplots not resolved, And, I'm sorry, but this is the last time I'm paying 14.99 for a Kindle book. It's the last time I automatically pre-order a Nora Roberts book. She writes trilogies and stand alone romantic suspense. This felt like a trilogy that didn't quite gel.If I didn't think it was unethical to return a book I actually did read, I would have returned this one.I love Nora Roberts' books. I do. I read and re-read them. Not this one. The best character was Sundown, the horse, because he could be cute and he didn't talk.

I am such a Nora Roberts fan. I have read nearly all of her books through the years. She's a fantastic storyteller. I know her books tend to have patterns, familiar plots, character types, themes, etc. However, she tells a great story. She entertains you, makes you care, gives you a satisfying journey with real heart and humanity to it. Having said all of those things, I still have to rate this book 3/5 stars for "just okay." It was not one of my favorites. There are plenty of reviews that summarize the plot so I'll skip to the point. The core problem with this book for me was the jarring imbalance created by juggling two storylines so different in tone. Usually, this author manages to weave storylines adeptly. This felt less like weaving and more like juxtaposition, and it didn't work for me.The JD Robb books are dark, gritty. The heroine in those books, Eve, has a horrifying childhood, and it's dealt with in a beautiful manner as she grows to understand who she is and how far she has come from that terrified child. They include mysteries, and a beautiful love story of two wounded souls finding each other. This book reminds me of that series in the sense of not shying away from the topic of abuse. This book, too, has a character (Alice) who deals with horrific abuse. However, it's presented in a series of powerful, gut-wrenching, detailed flashbacks. It's very dark, so dark that it's difficult to read at times. Alice's journey is powerful, and it's well written, but it takes over the book in a way that shoves everything else to the side.On the one hand, you have a story of two characters falling in love. There's a lightness to it that is wonderful and enjoyable. However, when I read a scene where a character is making lists and mundanely doing daily stuff, and then jump to an absolutely gut-wrenching emotional scene of horror for another character, & then back to mundane two fun people falling in love, it's like whiplash. The contrast is so great that I couldn't get into the love story. I was still gutted by Alice. How can I care much or feel much about the light banter of a couple when another character's abuse is being powerfully described, in detail? If the book was solely Alice's journey, it might have worked better for me, or if the book was solely the love story. However, to jump between the two stories lessened the impact of both in a sense. It just didn't work.Nora Roberts had a storyline in Montana Sky with some similarities to this one. There was a serial killer in that book and he killed women. It was horrific. The difference, in my opinion is the level of detail. In Montana Sky, a character is introduced well enough that we care when something bad happens. However, the level of detail is brief enough that we don't identify with the character or know the character well enough to be gutted by it entirely. There is not a lot of time spent detailing the violence either. The deaths have an emotional punch but it's not that hard to transition back to the main character's concerns and viewpoints. That book is what I'd term a love story (actually three love stories) with a mystery (suspense elements). The focus in clear. The mystery is important in that it affects the characters directly, but there's a balance & purpose to it. It's clearly the story of three sisters coming to terms with their pasts, forming a family, and falling in love with their heroes. The serial killer portion serves that story rather than detracting from it.This book takes the time to truly put the reader squarely into Alice's horrific journey. You get to know her, root for her, and are anguished when she suffers at the hands of a madman. She's really fleshed out as a character and the level of detail on what happens to her is hard to read at times. That suffering is intense. Nora Roberts knows how to move an audience and she does. Powerfully. However, when the story then switches to the love story couples, it feels unreal. Boring and mundane. The difference in the emotion level is too great. We've gone too dark to go that light that fast. I never felt like I knew those couples very well, perhaps because I knew Alice at such a strong level. They felt a little flat or not as fleshed out. I didn't care about them as much, maybe because I couldn't get into their every day comings and goings when the emotions were so high and so dark every time it switched to Alice. If Alice was the primary story of this book, then the couples falling in love felt almost like a silly distraction. If the couples falling in love part of the book was the story, then Alice's journey didn't serve to enhance that story or help it. It overshadowed and lessened the stakes. (Example: Sure, you're feeling insecure about your growing feelings for this guy, but ALICE is being BEATEN AND TORTURED so probably a little spat with your guy doesn't rank super high as a real life problem.) It felt out of whack, like two very different stories throwing each other out of balance rather than assisting each other. The bottom line here is that this is not one of my favorite Nora Roberts books. If you're new to this author and enjoy romantic suspense, I'd recommend starting with a different book. Try Montana Sky or The Witness. For darker, grittier mysteries with a wonderful love story, I'd recommend her JD Robb books. They're great. She's a wonderful storyteller. No one enjoys every single book by an author. I didn't care for this one. However, I gave it three stars because even a so-so Nora Roberts story is still better than a vast number of books out there.

Not a new story and not nearly as well crafted as previous books. Not sure it was totally written by the author. This book was not written by the same person that has a magic way with words.

The book feels like a catalog of hotels/restaurants/etc by location catered for travelers, not a real travel guide. It doesn't tell you about the neighborhoods or the districts at all. The book does an adequate job commenting on the experience of each attraction/hotel/restaurant it writes about, such as xxx hotel has no stairs, but the price range is really high, as a room costs $199 is by no means "$" in the cheapest range even in LA. It doesn't talk about where they are situated so you have no idea what kind of experience/environment you are looking at. The maps are hardly informative. And the book have very few pictures/photos. It doesn't provide any insight into the destination. And its recommendations in general are very boring. This travel guide is best for tourist who book hotels, restaurant, tours etc weeks in advance, have a great time there (especially spending most of the time in theme parks, national parks, and tours), and then move to the next item, and just simply don't care about the place that much.

The book is too large and hard to search through because a lot of it is devoted to reviewing hotels, restraunts and night clubs. All of these are easy to search for online and would be more up to date. Therefore there was not enough information for the places I was interested in. There are other books that do a better job.

I've purchased many Fodor's guides through the years for help in planning our vacations. They are always helpful, user friendly, and right on the money about their starred attractions. The sample itineraries are well paced and always appropriate. We've made the most of our vacation time because of the Fodor's guides & even seen some attractions we'd have otherwise missed without their recommendation. Purchasing a Fodor's guide is money well spent.

Excellent reference for sites, hotels and restaurants for not only northern CA but for central CA as well. We found it extremely useful for our trip through Santa Barbara all the way through SF and wine country, Yosemite and Sequoia Parks.

Present for my Daughter for our trip next spring for her Graduation!!!

We were able to book our hotel and map out everything we wanted to see while out west. I first checked out an older version from our public library and after only starting to read, knew I would be ordering this treasure to bring with us.

Arrived quickly with great information

The description for older editions mentioned Yosemite, but not in the current edition

An excellent review of the immortality and ineffectiveness of the war on drugs -- a war the continues in a Neverending assault on the liberties of nonusers, as well as users, without achieving its stated goals.

If you, like the author and I, are opposed to the use of non-medicinal drugs then you must support the drug war, right? Vance answers that question with a resounding "No!"Laurence Vance is a Christian scholar who writes in a clear, concise style. He logically demonstrates that, from both the practical and moral points of view, the War on Drugs is evil in its effects.Eye-opening.

Paints a very depressing reality of the millions of dollars lost and the thousands upon thousands of lives altered because of a war declared on personal behaviors. Sad history of our country.

This book is a compiliation of essays condemning all aspects of the United tates' immoral, hypocritical, un-Constitutional, anf Biblically indefensible War on Drugs. Highly recommended. Mr. Vance DOES NOT support drug use; he only supports the freedom to use drugs (including alcohol and tobacco) without government restraint.

Good book that leaves no doubts about our loss of freedom.

Strong message well presented...

After readingn this I understand that our Constitution is under attack and becoming worthless

Outstanding read! Each chapter is an individual essay or article. They are somewhat repetitive but "repetition is the mother of all learning". Anyway, it is time for people to consider not only what is seen but what is unseen as far as the effects of this drug policy. Conservatives need to wake up and Mr. Vance goes a long way in this effort.

Here's my review on one of the three books that I've read by Maya Angelou:I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings:Smiling Through SadnessMaya Angelou’s first memoir, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, captures the sweetest, purest, and the most honest inner voice of a black child who grew up to be a heroine. Dr. Angelou does not censor anything; She wants us to know it all. It is so true, straightforward, and uncensored that many white parents have attempted to ban this book from schools. This memorable and mysterious autobiography - originally published in 1969 - was followed by another masterpiece entitled: Gather Together In My Name. Both books are available in audio format recorded by Random House Audio. It is amazing that we can hear Dr. Angelou reading her own books to us just like a grandmother putting us to sleep with her adventurous bed-time stories.Dr. Maya Angelou, who has been honored and awarded numerous times, is a pure soul writing about the evil world of the racist America keeping a matching voice on each chapter of her life. When she is writing about her experiences as a five-year-old, you hear a five-year-old talking to you. Being one of the most recognized public figures and a civil rights movement’s heroine, Maya Angelou, gives us a poetic journey of how a poor disadvantaged black girl was rejected by everyone including her own mother, raped by her mother’s boyfriend, and had to witness his crippled uncle hiding under a pile of onions and potatoes to be protected from racist white beasts on a regular basis. The good news is that the story of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings does not end here. This bird sings her heart out until the cage breaks and she becomes our national treasure. This powerful modern American classis has changed many readers’ (and listeners’) hearts and minds in a way that every great work of literature should. This book became the best-seller immediately after it was published. What added to my personal itch to read this book when I was first introduced to it was the fact that Dr. Angelou has described William Shakespeare as one of her strongest influence on her life and works. Shakespeare is my all-time favorite “pennist.”Buy it, read it, keep it, reread it, highlight it, talk about it, advertise it, buy more of it and give it out as a gift, learn from it, and apply what you’ve learned from it in your daily life. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is coming from a heart and soul of someone who had to witness the unnecessary, harsh, and brutal insults that no ordinary human being can bear. Maya Angelou writes the story of a human who was pushed to her limits by the ugliness of this world and while being in a saddest cage, sang the happiest song. Once precious Maya Angelou told her younger generation that seem to be unable to cope with the racism in the past and present:“You should be angry. You must not be bitter. Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. It doesn’t do anything to the object of its displeasure. So use that anger. You write it. You paint it. You dance it. You march it. You vote it. You do everything about it. You talk it. Never stop talking it.”

Maya Angelou is, of course, very famous, and the title of this book is known to most people. For years, with a few exceptions, I have been reading nonfiction. I have been intensely interested in a few subjects, which changed somewhat as I grew older, but rarely turned to fiction. It was no doubt because of an attempt to remedy my ignorance that I picked this up, as well as the fact that it was only two dollars on Book Bub. I now understand why Maya Angelou was such a giant figure in American literature. In rich, sometimes poetic language, she brings the reader into her world of social tensions and appreciation of her culture. She is able to demonstrate the degree of her strength and intelligence, and I came to a great appreciation of this major writer.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to read this book! I've heard about it for years, seen it referenced in other books and movies, yet I always avoided reading it myself. After coming across it again on the Amazon store, I decided to go ahead. Maybe I would get bored one day and skim it.Oh my goodness. As soon as I started reading it, I didn't stop. Starting at 7:00 pm., by the time the birds signaled dawn, I finished the last page with tears in my eyes.Aside from the obviously touching story, Maya Angelou is a truly gifted writer. She was able to transform her writing as her character (herself) aged. She wrote from the mind of a child in the beginning, and by the end, she had a new maturity.Beautiful. Worth all the accolades it's received thus far.

I wasn't excited about this book before reading it, but boy was I wrong! This book is actually fantastic! Angelou writes about such heavy issues (abandonment, sexual assault, racism, sexual confusion, etc.), and yet her writing is so crafty and crisp that the reader does not feel overwhelmed or put off. The writing is so fun and engaging. Angelou makes use of figurative language to paint vivid and delightful pictures of her childhood experiences. She does a great job of communicating so much in less than 300 pages. There are many little gems embedded on every page; this book is so rich with meaning and literary technique.

This story of the author's childhood is beautifully told with honesty, dignity and hope. While some scenes are intense and painful, all shine through the eyes of this bright child who views the world, even at its harshest, with wonder. The chapter describing her graduation from eighth grade encompasses all of these emotions: the joy of a child who has a achieved a valued goal and is being recognized as a 'star' by her community, only to be told by a crass political speaker that she and her kind have no hope to excel beyond their position as dictated by their race; followed by a realization that the pride and defiance of their very survival has made them strong enough to give lie to his claims. While The Caged Bird has the attraction of most good childhood autobiographies, showing through young eyes how someone can overcome the worst kind of adversity and thrive, it has another dimension as well. The author reports with dignified distance on the events of her childhood, but not without critical judgement. In the course of telling her story, she also give insight into her culture and the reasons behind it.Beyond the wonderful style, it's a worthwhile and enlightening read.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Fifth grader Noah Keller is surprised when both his parents pick him up from school and astonished when they tell him that his mother has been granted permission to do "dissertation research" in East Germany for six months—and that they're leaving immediately and temporarily changing their names. After learning "The Rules, as Explained by Noah's Mother," which include statements such as "they will always be listening and often be watching" and "don't ever talk about serious things indoors; in particular, never refer to people by name," Noah (now called Jonah) arrives in East Berlin with his family. A new friend, tragedy, and burgeoning suspicion about Noah's parents play out in a subtle and well-paced story about the months leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tension mounts as Noah continues to gain an understanding of the fear and desperation people feel, while readers are privy to "Secret Files" that provide historical context. Multidimensional characters are developed piece by piece to keep mystery and curiosity alive. Noah and his parents share a loving bond that grounds the plot and provides a shelter from the uncertainty and confusion Noah often feels in light of unfamiliar surroundings and jarring situations. Nesbet writes an interesting and nuanced narrative that weaves history, mystery, and friendship with enough action to keep readers engaged. VERDICT A great choice for those looking for a thrilling historical fiction or coming-of-age tale.—Kelsey Johnson-Kaiser, St. Paul Public Library.

An astonishing book. I got my copy yesterday, stayed up too late reading it, and finished it today--even though I should have been doing other things. This story covers a subject rarely seen in children's fiction--life in East Berlin before the wall came down. The story is gripping and fascinating. Ten-year-old Noah's parents take him into East Berlin, changing his name to Jonah and behaving mysteriously in a world that becomes increasingly surreal. Noah brings his copy of Alice in Wonderland with him, and soon he realizes that he too has fallen down a rabbit hole of sorts. Lonely at first, he befriends an imaginative girl named Claudia (Cloud), whose parents disappear, and have died, she is told, though she fantasizes that they are still living but have just forgotten her. Her theory and magical projections turn out to be in part true. Kids will be gripped by Noah's story and will be thrilled by the novel's mysteries--trying to figure out what is really happening and who is spying on whom--even as they learn a great deal about history and life in divided Berlin. The ending is poignant and powerful--but ultimately happy, as the novel is set in 1989, when the wall came down. Teachers will be able to use parts of this book to fulfill nonfiction reading requirements, as the "Secret File" sections after each chapter fill in historical information in a unique, very kid-friendly narrative voice. The ending also invites kids to meditate on reading "nonfiction." "Whenever a book claims to be telling the truth," Nesbet writes, "it is wise (as Noah's mother says at one point) to 'keep asking questions.'" Powerful, moving, astonishing. A book that will change the way readers understand the world.

Take one boy named Noah and give him a stutter so he is an outsider. then turn his world upside down. That is what Anne Nesbet, the author has done to her character Noah Keller. Noah leaves his fifth-grade classroom and finds his mom and dad in a rental car. It is on the ride that they explain to him that his mom has the opportunity of a lifetime. She is working on her dissertation about schools and children with problems like her son's. Noah learns that all of the German lessons he has been taking had a purpose. They will be flying into East Berlin. Noah has a new name and new rules. He is now known as Jonah Brown. He can't do anything that will bring attention to himself or his parents. He must not question anything because the walls have bugs. He isn't allowed to go to school even though he has taken their test. He meets a girl in his apartment building named Claudia. Because of his stutter, he ends up calling her Cloud-Claudia. She names him Wallfish. What happens when they are caught up in something that they were not a part of. How will the secret he knows about Claudia affect their friendship?Because I'm an adult and remember the fall of the Berlin Wall, this book was so important for me to read. I have always been fascinated by this topic. My father was stationed in Berlin when he was in the Army. This is such an important piece of history that unfortunately isn't really taught in schools. I do my best to at least introduce it to my sixth graders to the topic. I want them to start their own research on such an important topic. I am impressed with the way the author handled the topic. The reader is right there and can feel the strain the people living on the East side of the wall must have felt, especially if they didn't agree with the politics at the time. This is a book I will definitely promote to my students. I had an extra copy so I passed it along to my granddaughter who had picked it up to look at. Thank you Anne Nesbet for creating a perfect book at the perfect time.

VERY well done! The author, knowing that teens today have no concept of the Cold War like those of us dinosaurs who remember life before the internet, includes very helpful commentary on the things going on in the story. These panels in bold not only explain what was really going on in East Berlin at the time, but how that became the experience of the characters. This might look like a 12 year old read, but it's meaty and suspenseful enough to be interesting into adulthood:The main character has his world pulled out from under him by his parents, and then spends the rest of the story trying to figure out what parts of his life are true and what parts are lies and whether his parents were lying to him before they moved, or only now after they moved. That alone is riveting - knowing that your parents are lying but you have no idea about what or when, or even why.Throw into that an entire state (East Berlin) built on lies and deception and a heartbroken orphaned friend also enmeshed in the lies and before you know it, your very survival is dependent on what you believe or what you think is true.

Noah's normal life is turned upside down when his parents whisk him away to a new life, complete with a new name and birthday, in East Berlin. The year is 1989, when the cold war is finally seeing signs of a thaw, but the people of East Germany are still at the mercy of the secret police. Even an outspoken girl named Claudia, who's dealing with a mystery of her own. The atmosphere, plot, and heart of this story are woven together deftly, and would appeal to readers of WHEN YOU REACH ME or THE THIEF, in my opinion. (Bonus: Each chapter ends with a 'secret file' containing cool historical facts.)A perfect book to hunker down with on a fall day with a cup of hot cocoa!

This is an excellent piece of historical fiction. It covers a period of history that's sadly missing from most elementary and secondary school curricula. The story, being told from the point of view of a 11 year old makes the observations and explanations real and accessible to even elementary school children. There is nothing controversial in this book .. no guns, foul language or bad habits. Just a great kid with a good heart trying to put the pieces of a complicated puzzle together in his mind.
