Selections from Science and Sanity represents Alfred Korzybski's authorized abridgement of his magnum opus, Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics. This second edition, published in response to the recent Korzybski revival, adds new introductory material and a revised index, providing an accessible introduction to Korzybski's arguments concerning the need for a non-Aristotelian approach to knowledge, thought, perception, and language, to coincide with our non-Newtonian physics and non-Euclidean geometries, to Korzybski's practical philosophy, applied psychology, pragmatics of human communication, and educational program. Selections from Science and Sanity serves as an excellent introduction to general semantics as a system intended to aid the individual's adjustment to reality, enhance intellectual and creative activities, and alleviate the many social ills that have plagued humanity throughout our history.

Do pay attention to the title on this offering. This is not the original work from 1933, it is "Selections from . . ." Readers who recommended this work to me, and authors such as William S. Burroughs and Robert Anton Wilson who are constantly quoting from the original book and championing the author as a linguistic genius that all others should only be judged against, convinced me to give this a read. I'm loaded with plenty of "to reads" already, and the usual distractions of life, so I thought this abridged version would do fine. I think I was right. I would definitely recommend this to the casual or curious reader, but, for more academic or scholarly use, I would suggest purchasing the real deal, as I probably will at some future time. The introductory remarks and preface clearly delineate which sections and what material have been left out, and I think this page can be viewed on the Amazon description . . . not sure, but if you are that concerned, give it a try. I would, do, and will recommend this work to the readers and for the purposes mentioned above.

The most important knowledge contained in ‘Science and Sanity’ can be found in the preface sections - a number of prefaces, in chronological order, have been included. The prefaces unveil the science of General Semantics, created by Korzybski. The main body of the book then examines various branches of human knowledge through the prism of his concepts, covering areas such as: Anthropology, Biology, Education, Logic, Mathematics, Neurology, Physics and Physiology.Science and Sanity may appear to be a difficult book to read and understand, but this stems from our per-conditioning and flawed perception that doesn’t take into account the role of our senses and the role of the human nervous system in connecting reality and our minds. Like any paradigm shifter, it requires repeated reads, to infuse the mind with a different (better) perception of reality. Once this occurs, your world will never be the same.If you want to better understand yourself and those around you, seriously consider reading this book. If you work as a scientist then every day you spend without having read it will be a waste.

I study mathematics and its applications, particularly physical applications. I read a little theology. I have poor patience for most other reading material. Too much of it seems to be content-free. This book is unlikely anything I've seen before. It's just stunningly insightful. It is one of the very few books I've gotten which has content at a satisfying density. That is, the author doesn't go on and on without saying something important. It is possible to observe that the writing can be repetitive, but I think the repetition is good for me. It emphasizes portions of the learning that I have to have a chance to observe. Although titled "general semantics," a friend of mine correctly points out that this is really an epistemology. It is really a science of how we know and how we improve our cognitive functions. When he told me that this could revolutionize our schools and our outreach programs to people whose lives have gotten off track, I thought, "How could that be?" But, he was perfectly correct. It is the most powerful and most interesting book of practical philosophy I have ever found. In fact, it would be difficult for me to name another book of practical philosophy just now. This is stunning. I consider it universally useful reading.

For ANYONE who has been involved with Neuro-Linguistic Programming, this should be standard reading. The amount of NLP underpinnings which come from this body of work is staggering. Korzybski was so far ahead of his time, bringing together elements and seeing the importance of how each person creates meaning and applies it to and through their language. I'm still reading it, but it's incredible.

A challenging and provocative book -- though an edited version of Korzybski's great work, and 80 years old -- this book will make most anyone think hard about how they think about reality and use language, which was precisely Korzybski's intent. Some of his conclusions are clearly dated, but he knew that was coming, and that the overall thrust of his thinking would describe scientific thinking for decades while challenging the fantastic thinking of his age, and ours.

A classic! One of the foundations of Neuro Linguistic Programming. Leads to very clear thinking. A heavy read.

If you are interested in General Semantics and find diving right into the entirety of 'Science and Sanity' grim and daunting, these selections are ideal for acquiring a basic overview of Korzybski's thinking.'Selections from Science and Sanity' provides convincing key points and postulates that lead way for a beneficial application of non-aristotelian systems. In other words, this book may change your life.Love it.

As the title indicates this is not the entire book, but rather chosen selections from it.

Seth Andrews, the man who gave us The Thinking Atheist, knows Christianity. He was raised in it, worked in it professionally spreading its message across the airwaves, and finally reached a crossroads where his faith could not stand against the occurrences of this world. So many of us who have been on similar journeys can identify with what Seth has to say, and yet learn some insights that we may have not considered. His story is heart breaking. This is not the story of someone who faced one tragedy and threw it all away; most walking away from faith stories aren't. Not only does he share his story, but he also addresses common questions from Christians and answers them; what else from "The Thinking Atheist"? To those unfamiliar with Seth Andrews and his website/podcast/youtube page The Thinking Atheist, it may sound as if he is being condescending or arrogant. Nothing of the sort. In his words, the name "simply reflects the fact that my own liberation came when I stopped assuming and broke the chain of inherited belief through reason, curiosity and common sense. My freedom came when I began thinking for myself.""Deconverted" is a great read, not very long, yet very powerful. It's not just an atheist story, but a human one. It does more than take us one on man's journey through emotional ups and downs; it makes us think.

I have read many of the more popular, well known atheist authors from Dan Barker's "Godless" to Ayaan Hirsi Ali's "Infidel" and their personal stories of struggling with religious believe, their doubt and their difficult personal journey, down the path from devoutly religious to freeing themselves, from religious faith and dogma and becoming non-believers. Seth's own story is no less compelling reading and just as emotional and moving."Deconverted: A Journey from Religion to Reason" is a well written autobiography told with humour and heart by an "average" person. It is the story lived by many thousands of people in America and around the World, every day. This story could very well be your story of doubt and loss of religious faith.I think this book will be an insightful read for both the non-believer and the faithful. Those doubting their religious faith and the irrational religious dogma, will find solace in knowing that it is indeed ok to question one's religious faith and what you have been instructed to think by your Parents, Pastors and Priests. The Faithful will gain an understanding in simple terms, as to why their loved ones and friends can and do quit their faith and turn away from religious dogma. The reader will receive a first hand account of the experience of someone, who was raised in a very Christian home by loving, devout Christian parents in a majority Christian community, in the belt buckle of the Bible belt of Mid Western America and who, as an adult began to question his religious faith. The Believer who has doubts, will be able to relate to Seth and his story on a personal level. Seth had those same doubts about his faith, as you do and began to ask the difficult questions, started thinking for himself and finally followed where logic, common sense and reality, not faith, indoctrination and traditional ancient dogma, lead him.. To Reason!I highly recommend this book :)

I felt very alone during my 2007 middle-aged deconversion, despite living in the most unchurched part of the country (Pacific Northwest). However, as time passed fellow faith-expats like Seth Andrews published their exodus stories and I began to feel like I was part of a burgeoning movement. Reading "Deconverted" was like a trip through memory lane, and I easily identified with the story of a man who, after decades in the Church, finally figured out it was a house of cards and abandoned a comfortably numb religious fantasy for the soothing balm of atheist rationality.Mr. Andrews and I are both Generation X and therefore experienced many of the same Christian rites of passage, such as being scared towards God by the apocalyptic "Thief in the Night" cheese-fest series of movies and rocking out in a holy way to righteous acts like Petra and the Imperials. He got saved at a much earlier age than I did due in no small part to the influence of his Christian parents, but our post-conversion result was the same: a passion for all things Jesus and a quest to become a "man of God" via the Scriptural use of spiritual gifts and natural talents. In the author's case, coming of age during the big boom of contemporary Christian music in the 80s and 90s led Mr. Andrews to his calling as a Christian radio deejay. At first life seemed divinely ordered, but as time went on he began to question his beliefs as he grieved over the senseless deaths of devout Christian musicians Keith Green and Rich Mullins, cringed at the excesses of evangelical luminaries such as Oral Roberts, and recoiled from the horrifying actions of religious fanatics during 9/11. Mr. Andrews' once fiery faith began to sputter and he settled into what a more zealous believer would call a "lukewarm" mindset. But as the saying goes: "when the student is ready, the master will appear." This fateful event happened for Mr. Andrews (and me as well) when the New Atheists began releasing their controversial and hard-hitting tomes. In particular, raconteur Christopher Hitchens made a strong impression on the author with his witty and articulate demolition of all things religious. The last of Mr. Andrews' Christianity fell before the onslaught of Mr. Hitchens and his rational comrades, and he was reborn with a new mission as founder of The Thinking Atheist and producer of podcasts and video resources for non-believers.Each chapter of "Deconverted" begins with an encouraging quote from a member of The Thinking Atheist Internet community. In addition to his personal tale, Mr. Andrews has gathered some of the gorier and more contradictory aspects of the Bible that are usually ignored or rationalized by believers (provided they actually read their holy book, which is less common than you might expect). His categorization of Christian apologetic archetypes was familiar and insightful as well (check out Bill Maher's fine documentary "Religulous" for real-life examples in the wild). After finishing the book I was inspired to hit the Web and investigate Mr. Andrews' organization and other atheist-related websites and Facebook groups. Turns out I'm not so alone - "Deconverted" is now one of many ex-Christian memoirs, blogs, and groups where the newly rational can find fellowship and encouragement. Although lifelong unbelievers will enjoy "Deconverted", those of us who did time in Christianity will deeply appreciate and relate to Mr. Andrews' pilgrimage to atheism.

Dreamspeakers continues the Revised edition Traditions books which I've been enjoying very much. Though I've personally never been much of a Mage fan, I do try to keep abreast of the different groups out there for when I run a game of my own to make my World of Darkness a more well-rounded experience for all. That said, I often found the previous edition Tradition books dull and clunky. The newer Revised editions are not so, and have a much better narrative structure around them, despite using most of the same narrative conventions. This may work because there seems to be less melodrama and more instruction for the Mages working their way through their individual Traditions. Not so for the Dreamspeakers for whome such generalizations are hard, since the Tradition name is here revealed to be a catch-all for any Mage who works with spirits, and this Tradition seems to be the most disorganized and chaotic so far. Dreamspeakers (or "Shamans" as they are more likely to be referred to in the book) can come from any walk of life, from any culture, and can even be Awakened by powerful Spirits, making them a highly eclectic group which is difficult to characterize or give mutual goals to as a group. Of the Revised books so far, this one makes the best case for an all-Dreamspeaker game (as opposed to an all fill-in-Tradition-name-here game).Best of all is the Tradition is no longer made out to be a bunch of drum-beating tribalists stuck in the modern era. This gives the Tradition more depth and is greatly appreciated by me.

Good purchase

Wow! And I thought the original Dreamspeakers Tradition book was good. This one just blew me away. It was so amazing. This revised edition really expands on just what it means to be a Shaman. Following the journey of a young Shaman, we learn just about every aspect of Shamanism in this book. Starting from the introduction, which explains the mood, theme and set-up of the book, we go into a brief history of the world, as told by the spirits themselves. Then they go on to take us on a tour of the Americas, Africa and other lands, and the shaman who work in those lands. Sidebars fill us in on spirit perspectives and how words really can matter when dealing with spirits. We go on to get Dreamspeaker views on other Traditions, supernatural beings and even dealing with spirits. The first chapter closes out with word on Dreamspeaker philosophy and how shamanism can be integrated with other religions, from New Age faiths and Shinto to Christianity and Islam. The next chapter goes into more details on Dreamspeaker structure, giving write-ups for each major Dreamspeaker faction: the Baruti (wandering storytellers), spirit-trained Independants, the Ghost Wheel Society (techno-shamans), Keepers of the Sacred Flame (traditional shaman), Red Spears (warriors), Spirit Smiths (fetish makers) and Solitares (lone shaman). Then we get more on animism, ecstasy and transvestite shamanism, followed by how Dreamspeakers view magic and the spheres. Some new mechanics for madness, Awakened items, coping with the Avatar Storm, Spirit allies, Totems and lesser Shaman paths, as well as more spirit Rotes (many quite inventive) and Fetishes than you can shake a stick at, close out this chapter. The next chapter goes through famous Dreamspeakers, including a Siberian master who survived the Avatar Storms and Xoca, the Dreamspeaker signature character. Then we get some interesting suggestions for Dreamspeaker chronicles, and a group of NPCs who serve as shamans by helping educate poor communities across the world. Then we get the usual sample NPCs, including some unique ones like an Armenian vigilante who speaks to ghosts of his murdered relatives, a Native American shaman attached to the American military as an advisor, the shaman without a tribe and an African pirate who follows Shango, the Orisha of thunder. The end of the book brings the story of our Shaman-in-training full circle, though I won't give it away. We also get some very good recommendations for books and movies, most of which I agree embody Dreamspeaker ideals or themes quite well. Over all, its a great resource for playing Dreamspeakers, or even shamans in general. After all, most of the infomation is very general, so it can apply equally well for Orphans, Kopa Loei, Ba'ata, Sons of Tengri and Ecstatic or Akashic Shaman. My only comment on the book is that it is very broad. Shamanism is a varied practice found in all cultures. Sure, you've got Native American, Siberian, African, Aboriginal, Korean and Pacific Islander Shamanism. But Shamanism exists elsewhere; followers of Voudon and Santeria, Shinto priests, Christian mystics who speak to Angels and Demons, Bedouin wisewomen, Bluesmen who learn from the Dark Man at the Crossroads, Mexican curanderos, Bon Po priests in Tibet, Chinese peasant wizards and beyond. If you really want to add cultural depth to your character, it might help to get a good book on anthropology, mythology or a specific culture (Hmong, !Kung, Aboriginal, Cree, Aztec, etc) as well.

This Tradion Book just blew me away. While the narrative was slightly confusing in the begining, but it does pick up after a bit.The character archetypes, Rotes and spirit creation information makes this book a valuable resource. The main shortcoming of this book is that it contantly references other books such as 'Axis Mundi', 'The Spirit Ways' and 'Werewolf'. However, the information on spirits completely makes up for this. This book is an absolute MUST for any Storyteller or Dreamspeaker player.

Review

"Formosa Moon is more than just another wonderful travel book about Taiwan. It is armchair travel at its finest with a delightful He Says/She Says twist. Like the beautiful island itself, Formosa Moon will surprise and delight you at every turn. You don’t have to know Taiwan or even have any plans to ever visit the place to love this book. But after reading Formosa Moon you might feel compelled to make the trip yourself." Book Description

“When Stephanie and I first realized we were in love, I gave her The Talk: Specifically, that as much as I loved her, I’d always also love Taiwan, and if she stayed with me she’d have to share me with the other love of my life.” Thus begins Formosa Moon, a romantic and geeky cultural journey around Taiwan undertaken by a couple comprised of a seasoned guidebook writer intimately familiar with life in Asia and a first-time visitor who agreed to leave everything behind and relocate to the island nation sight unseen. Along the way the couple lose themselves in Taoist temples, feast on street food and explore Taiwan’s breathtaking scenery while also engaging in less typical expatriate activities including filming a clandestine puppet show in a hijacked hotel lobby, accidentally taking up chicken farming in their residential Taipei neighborhood, and allowing themselves to be briefly sucked into a local religious cult…all in in the name of cultural immersion. Part travelogue, part guidebook, part memoir, Formosa Moon is a dual-voice narrative offering practical travel information about this young and vibrant democracy while commenting hilariously on their often unusual travel experiences around the island, ultimately inspiring readers to explore the many fascinating layers of Taiwan on a deeper level. Join the couple on their strange and magical journey of discovery through Formosa, aka “The Beautiful Island”.

Full disclosure: I know Stephanie and Joshua. So of course I bought their book when it came out. That’s what supportive friends do. I had no idea that it was going to be as good as it is. I started reading it (gotta be able to say something knowledgeable when they ask, right?) and I swear, I couldn’t put it down. I read a fair amount of entertaining travel books and this ranks up there with my favorites. I love the format, seeing each experience from both points of view. I love that the stories take precedence but it’s also a useful travel guide. I laughed out loud every few pages and found myself intrigued and interested in both Taiwan and their adventures there. After reading this, I can kinda understand Joshua’s obsession with Taiwan. It certainly made ME want to go. Luckily, I know someone who lives there....

Wow. I picked up this book to glean a little insight into Taiwan, a place that has always fascinated me. I had no idea I was about to become engrossed in one of the most humorous and engaging pieces of travel writing I've read in a long time.I especially loved the dual perspective that Josh and Stephanie bring to many of their experiences and adventures...quite unique and refreshing. You basically get to experience Taiwan from the viewpoint of a fluent speaker who is also well versed in the ways of the island (Josh), and from the eyes of someone (Stephanie) whose first step in Asia was in the airport of Taiwan. These guys get up to some seriously fun (and funny) adventures...like scuba diving to a shipwreck INSIDE a hotel (p. 250)? how about NOT illegally scaling a mountain for a skinny dip in a famous hot spring (p.78)? Or visiting a Fairy Cave, UFOs, and eating oyster omelets (p.47)? If you want to see the real Taiwan, for all its quirks, art, and beauty, this is your book. Now to the humor. It is not over-the-top, but just enough to give you chuckle on every page and keep the pages turning. I am serious when I say I was ROLFing on multiple occasions...I mean laughing so hard your stomach hurts kind of laughing. Just to give you a few of my favs so you know what you are in for:"I spent most of each thirty-minute [reflexology] session screaming “Shou buliao! Shou buliao!” (“I can’t take it!”), to which he would gently reply “Ren ai…” (“Endure…”)" - Josh"Apparently I’d jumped into the deep end at Fish Bite Foot. Story of my life!" - StephanieOK enough of my glowing review, grab yourself a copy of this book and let me know if you are able to put it down!See you in Taiwan!Mike

Whether you are a newcomer to Taiwan or an old hand, Formosa Moon has a little bit of everything for you. It's written in a very interesting way, alternating between a fresh off the boat female and a Taiwan-loving long timer (ish) male, trying to show why he loves Taiwan. There were plenty of new places they visited that made me want to go check them out, and a lot of interesting tales along the way. When the book was over, I really wanted to know what happened next. I guess I'll have to wait for Formosa Moon II.

Great introduction to Taiwan without being pretentious and stuffy.Kicked-back style and even a (rare) appearance of puppets.Highly recommended

Formosa MoonWhether you know Taiwan intimately or want to see it through an expert's eyes as someone who has never been, Formosa Moon is an enchanting wander through Taiwan, written as a love story between Taiwan expert and Lonely Planet author, Joshua Samuel Brown; and his partner Stephanie Huffman, a newcomer to Taiwan and to Asia.Formosa Moon is told from two perspectives, each chapter partitioned off by icons of the authors so the reader can experience both sides of each adventure. The couple recounts their tales of traveling around the island and falling in love with Taiwan's complex history, its sweet but slightly zany citizens, all while offering a deep exploration of Taiwan along with practical information for newcomers and expats alike.Formosa Moon introduces Taiwan in such a way that will never make you forget how utterly unique and charming this tiny island is.Brown is a leading expert on Taiwan and well known for his personal tours of Taiwan. When he creates the ultimate Taiwan itinerary and journey for his love so she can experience his beloved second home through his eyes, we come full circle to Formosa Moon, a beautifully honest adventure about life in Taiwan, designed to seduce Brown's love and their readers into falling in love with Taiwan. Ultimately, as we learn about Taiwan, we also learn about the love between these two travelers that share an mutual respect for exploring, and on both sides, for enduring some not so tempting parts about Taiwan. In Huffman's case, dietary restrictions become a real adventure and challenge, but in this challenge, readers learn what to expect and what not to expect from culinary cuisine in Taiwan. On Brown's side, we read about some adventures he has done in the past that turned out equally as uncomfortable for him as the first time around.Having lived in Taiwan since 2006, parts of this book are things I know well about Taiwan, but it's like I forgot what I've seen myself - much of it through Brown's suggestions to me in his other books - and was reminded once again of how unique this island is. This book will make you fall in love with Taiwan.I loved how the authors set up the chapter list, so this gets an extra A+ for originality for its chapter headings. I rarely look at the chapter list, but I had a good laugh at the opening in this one. Some of my favorite chapters in the book are:*But first, an offshore adventure*Our whirlwind tour kicks into high gear*The moon represents my heart (One of the most beautiful chapters in this book.)*Puppets and astrological errors*The winding road to autonomy*Keeping up appearances*Dark night of the soul*A peculiar mingling of love and death*We find ourselves managing a hotel (This chapter is hilarious.)Best Takeaway Quotes:“Once it drew me into its gravity, this strange and alien land I’ve chosen to call home for long stretches has been the one true constant in my life. Taiwan has granted me a near-constant reprieve from my most feared nemesis, boredom, but at times she’s driven me half-mad. Taiwan has been my muse, the source of inspiration for much of my creative output as a writer, while at the same time never quite letting me forget that the language in which I write is not the lingua franca of the place about which I write. I have loved Taiwan for nearly all of my adult life. At times this love has shone as brilliantly as the moon over Kenting during the Mid-Autumn Festival, at others far less brightly, like a crescent moon during the long rainy season in Taipei,…. So when I sang it was this love for Taiwan, waxing and waning, but always present, that I felt.” ~Joshua Samuel Brown, Formosa MoonYuraw thought for a moment before saying that he would like to sing us a song. I was totally delighted as the deputy chief of Smangus began singing to us in his own language, drawing pictures in the air with his hands of mountains, rivers, and trees. His voice was strong and deep, and the fire pit glowed a dull red as the darkening sky wrapped around us. The love he felt for his community was palpable and for a moment the area transformed into a timeless space where the remoteness seemed the only thing in existence. -Stephanie Huffman, Formosa MoonGrandfather Shi must have loved Ita Thao. His relatives were certainly making his last hours there memorable ones. Though the ceremony did not have strippers (at least none that we saw), there was no shortage of other elements designed to produce 'hot noise' that's an indispensable feature of any Taiwanese funeral. Designed to celebrate the life of the deceased and ensure their smooth passing into the next world, Grandfather Shi's hot noise included gongs mixed with rigorous Buddhist chanting, pop music, karaoke, and later, a live band complete with drummers and an accordion. All of this was taking place under a covered tent set up in the alleyway next to the Cherry Feast Resort, where we'd booked a three-day stay in advance.". ~Joshua Samuel Brown, Formosa MoonPublication Date: October 2018. You can pre-order through Amazon. A beautiful and a very enchanting wander through Taiwan.

While this book may be along the lines of Warriner's books, it does not maintain its tradition. It is not comprehensive for a book intended for high school seniors. It retains a fair portion of the grammar, usage, and mechanics lessons from Warriner's complete course, but it skips nearly all of the style, composition, and research lessons that Warriner used to include. This falls well short of the reference book that I think it should be. Warriner's Complete Course has a place on my reference bookshelf; this book will not.

Perfect!

Perfect .... thanks ..... I loved it .. and the item is in perfect condition . Now I can do my homework lol ... thank you again.

“Hirsch’s poem Gabriel, is as raw, as relentless in its inconsolability, as anything I’ve read.” --David Ulin, Los Angeles Times"Part tribute; part existential howl; part intellectual investigation of our most primal emotions; part novella-like, buoyant, unsentimental romp through the life of Hirsch’s ‘wild spirit, beloved son…’”--Emily Rapp, New York Times Book Review"Hirsch's lightening-lit portrait of and surging lament for his hurricane of a son is a courageous, generous, and reverberating epic of fatherly love and mourning."--Donna Seaman, Booklist, starred reivew "Embedded within Gabriel is a picaresque novella about a tempestuous boy and young man, a part Hirsch calls 'the adventures of Gabriel...' [The poet] Eavan Boland described Gabriel as 'a masterpiece of sorrow. . . the creation of the loved and lost boy is one of the poem's most important effects.'"--Alec Wilkinson, The New Yorker "Unpunctuated, unrhymed triplets serve Hirsch’s grief and tell his story well. . . a near-unforgettable book-length verse memoir describing the life and death, the rambunctious childhood, the adventurous youth, the funeral, and the enduring memory, of the poet’s only son."--Publishers Weekly"Gabriel resists sentimentality at every line break, though it is the most heartfelt poem I have read."--Tim Adams, The Observer “Gabriel is an exquisite document of loss.”--Michael Andor Brodeur, Boston GlobeFrom the Hardcover edition.

This poem reminded me of something. I pulled Emily Dickinson, John Ciardi's Dante, and Felix Feneon's Novels in Three Lines off the shelf. Dickinson was too nineteenth century, but plenty of truth there. Ciardi had the three-line stanza, but he was doing Dante and had to haul out every word he knew. Feneon was closest. As a journalist, he had to call death by its right name.In his new book-length poem Gabriel, Edward Hirsch has given his dead son a proper send off and he has begun the task of placing the boy's life in some sort of perspective. It takes a special lens. Gabriel was an adopted child born with a mysterious developmental disorder that made him impetuous, impatient, and loud. No school could hold him. He never had the natural fear of danger that keeps most of us alive. He was never, his father tells us, scared enough of drug dealers, one of whom sold him the tab of GBH that carried him off. I'm pretty sure Mr. Hirsch would never use even that level of metaphor for his son's death. The poem has no sentimentality, no anodyne phrases, no metaphors or euphemisms for death. The death of Gabriel was ugly, sudden, frightening, and final. When I read the poem, I felt lucky to glimpse this remarkable child's life. Fierce energy, sleepless always, loud opinions about everything and everyone, he was loved and his father writes, with an even, steady hand, of his life and his death. What I value most in this poem, after learning about what happened to Gabriel, is the use of language. It is restrained conversation, quiet, precise and respectful. And it's all here. Hirsch places Gabriel as a baby in the context of his childless marriage, the joy of the baby's arrival and the slow realization that Gabriel would be a challenge in every sense. We wend our way through Gabriel's childhood and confront the utter helplessness adults -- parents, teachers, psychiatrists -- inevitably felt when they tried to help him. As he became a young man, Gabriel described most encounters with those who tried to help with outspoken contempt. He would never accept when anyone, or the world at large, told him no. No, his father tells us, was just a meaningless word spoken on the way to yes. We share the clutching panic of parents whose developmentally disabled son disappears, but at an age that makes him too young and too old to warrant police intervention. Thankfully, the parents' investigation of the last number called on their son's phone leads them to the emergency personnel who were called the night Gabriel collapsed and died. To know, after so many days of not knowing, is an inexpressible relief. This is a book to be reread periodically. It is a comfort for those whom the syrupy ways we usually talk about death mean nothing, less than nothing. Everything about this poem is an attempt to hold a life still for a moment. A life that was never actually still, or quiet, until it finally was.

It is almost impossible to adequately describe or do justice to Edward Hirsch's heart-wrenching elegy about the short life and death of his son Gabriel. Consisting of three-lined stanzas with no punctuation that extends for 78 pages, it is part biography, part ode, part lament--you name it. Mr. Hirsch does an amazing job of letting the personality and life of his beloved son come through these grief-soaked lines. Hirsch and his wife Janet Landay adopted their son Gabriel when he was an infant and welcomed him into their lives. We got glimpses of his childhood, troubled young adulthood and ultimate early death from an apparent accidental drug overdose: "He was trouble/But he was our trouble." Interspersed among the lines that lets us see who his son was, Mr. Hirsch includes the stories of other poets throughout history who have lost children, surely what is the ultimate horror of every parent, what is completely unnatural: the burial of a childMuch of this poem will break your heart:In the casket I hope it's comfortableHe would have scorned the old JewWe hired to sit with him overnightJanet [you have to love this woman] didn't want him to be by himselfI'm sure he was annoyed by the prayersI wonder if he believed in God I never askedHe was sometimes scaredHe was never scared enoughOf scoundrels and drug dealersAfter Gabriel disappeared, his parents tried to find him:We called 911 every dayThe police refused to help usWe begged them to help they refusedBecause he wasn't under sixteen or over sixty-fiveMr. Hirsch catalogues the things that Gabriel loved, convincing me that I would like his son: Six Flags, Sea World, retracing Columbus' journey to the New World, Rome, absinthe, his 3000 green Acura Integra, New York City, the Yankees, the Giants, strong coffee, "Dogs were his natural friends," his twenty-second birthday. The author cannot be comforted:I did not know the work of mourningIs like carrying a bag of cementUp a mountain at nightI did not know the work of mourningIs a labor in the darkWe carry inside ourselvesFinally Mr. Hirsch has harsh words for an "indifferent God":Close the prayer book I will not pretendThat God brings peace upon usAnd upon all IsraelI will not forgive youIndifferent GodUntil you give me back my sonIf there is any consolation to be had from this poem that I have read two times now, it has to be that all of us must confront the deaths--if not of a child--then someone else whom we love dearly.

I feel that if I could write I would have written this poem for my recently passed son with only a few minor changes. The pain is there is most intense between the lines. As with my Robert, Gabriel was born under a bad star and it eventually took him. I also get the feeling of grief that stretches all the way back, knowing in your soul this would never end well. So I may be in a unique position having lived it so I greatly appreciate it.

I really don't know much about poetry. I don't know how a poem should be written. Some reviewers have mentioned that this is not true poetry. Well, I don't really care. When I read any book, I want to be taken beyond my regular life, to feel someone else's grief or happiness. This book accomplished that. But I suspect the author/poet wrote this poem more for himself than for us. And for that I thank him.

As a parent, I found Gabriel to be a powerful contemplation of the life and death of the poet's son. It explores what we can know, understand and control and what we can't (or shouldn't if we could). As parents, we constantly struggle with honoring who our child is and trying to mold them into the perfect, or at least most acceptable, version of themselves they can be. Sometimes, our children don't give us a choice in how that process proceeds, especially as they grow and go out into the world. If you want perfect poetry, read Keats. This is a personal story, told in poetry.
