I was just posting in a Historical Fiction group that the world needed more non-Western European historical fantasies. And guess what? Kiersten White's got a good one right here for you, folks.Ottoman empire and the Draculas! If you liked Rae Dawn Carson's Girl of Fire and Thorns or Renee Ahdieh's The Wrath and the Dawn or Shannon Hale's Book of a Thousand Days you should definitely check out this series. (although it's not a Scheherezade retelling, but definitely non-Western European in focus)Historically, Vlad Dracul and his brother, Radu the Handsome, spent time as child hostages under an Ottoman Sultan. In this book, White reimagines Vlad as a girl-- Lada Dragwlya-- who becomes an aggressive, fighting tomboy to get the attention first of her father and second to survive the Ottoman court.Only this is a YA love story, albeit with excellent historical context and political details of the times, and the story is just as much about Lada's brother, Radu, and the Sultan's son, Mehmed. The three of them form a complicated emotional tangle of love, resentment, and fear. And the ever present danger Lada and Radu face due to their hostage status keeps you reading just as much as the question of how these three passionate and emotionally wounded people will manage to live with each other. The press says "AND I DARKEN—the series that reads like HBO’s Game of Thrones . . . if it were set in the Ottoman Empire. " And while there's a bit of gory blood, a off-screen reference to Mehmed and his harem, there's nothing onscreen but some kissing a bit of heavy petting to keep it out of older YA hands. Definitely not as crazy as Game of Thrones, yet somehow more compelling because of its historical basis. I'm about to go get myself the sequel.

AND I DARKEN by Kiersten White is probably going to be one of my favorite reads of 2017. It was February when I read it, and I thoroughly enjoyed the historical re-telling of Vlad the Impaler as a teenage girl. Ottoman Empire, violence, and a girl who is a total babe? YES. Sign me up.Now, let me preface this review by saying And I Darken is a long book (nearly 500 pages) and it starts off slowly. It’s also not a plot-driven story, but a character-driven story. The first 60 or so pages are just of Lada and Radu growing up in Wallachia. By page 69, they have arrived at Edirne in the Ottoman Empire, where they are pawns in their father’s trade for protection of his throne in Wallachia. If their father is to break the treaty, Lada and Radu will be killed. I mean, how awful would you feel if your father cared so little about you but realized you were valuable only by securing his throne? In Edirne, Lada and Radu meet Mehmed, the third and least favorite son of the Sultan to the Ottoman Empire. They become friends as they grow up in the Ottoman Empire together. Lada is forever longing to go back home to Wallachia. Radu loves Islam and the Ottoman Empire and believes he is home. And as they grow, feelings also began to develop. Radu and Lada both fall for Mehmed.Yes, this means Radu is gay or potentially bisexual as his sexual identity is never mentioned on the page. He only seems to have feelings for Mehmed though.Siblings falling for the same person is like my favorite trope, guise. However, Mehmed doesn’t share the same feelings toward Radu – at least not in And I Darken. Mehmed instead has feelings toward Lada and an intense relationship blooms between them. I loved their passionate scenes. The characters in And I Darken come to life on the page; Lada becomes friends with Nicolae, a Janissary who is “a member of an elite force of military professionals, taken as boys from other countries, converted to Islam, educated, and trained to be loyal to the sultan.” (White, 480-481.) Radu becomes friend with Lazar, another Janissary, but Radu met Lazar in his father’s palace in Wallachia. Nicolae is also from Wallachia. The tight friendships make this story come to life because, again, it’s character-driven, not plot-driven. I’ve seen some reviews of people saying there’s too many characters, and that may be the case for them, but it wasn’t for me. There is a whole cast of characters, but I found it easy to keep them apart in my head because each character had an influence on Lada and Radu’s story. They weren’t throwaway characters. The characters all have a role, especially those in the Ottoman Empire, including the concubines in the Sultan’s harem. There is also a glossary of characters at the end on page 476.And I Darken is told between Lada and Radu. I think this helps with appealing to a bigger audience because Lada is extremely violent and selfish. She could be seen as an unlikable narrator. Radu is sweet and innocent, and his chapters brought light to what could have been an extremely dark book. It’s still a dark book – the title says it all. It’s also good to note that because of the period (1450s ish) and because of the extreme violence, this book isn’t for everybody. There is physical violence (and right away – Lada bites a cousin because he and his brother are beating up Radu) and sexual abuse including: grabbing a breast and a near rape scene.I would recommend And I Darken to readers of White’s previous books (especially those who loved Mind Games), fans of dark, gritty, and complex stories, and fans of historical fiction a la His Fair Assassin by Robin LaFevers. I am extremely happy that And I Darken is the first book of a trilogy, and I am eager for the sequels.

Gender-swapped Vlad the Impaler. Do you need to know more? And I Darken is the story of Lada, a Princess of Wallachia who falls into the hands of the Ottoman Empire along with her brother. Held hostage to ensure cooperation they plan their escape to freedom. This book was long. So long. Almost 500 pages. And you feel it. Fast paced? Not so much. This isn't a light paranormal YA that it might first appear to be. It is more along the lines of a dense historical, political drama. It probably took me six times longer to read it than other books of the same length because it dragged. Year pass, politics happen, and events unfold in slow motion. I thought that it was going to be incredibly gory as well. It is a Dracula retelling. There is violence but most of it is implied, and even the scenes of torture have a dispassionate tone that robs them of their horror.I am a bit torn about Lada. I love that streak of vicious practicality. There are very few female characters who break things down the way that she does. She finds her ultimate long-term goal and is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to get to it. Deliberately. The betrayals and deaths aren't accidents that just happen to come about. She carefully plans them to meet her own ends needs. She is a bit like the proverbial wolf gnawing away at a leg to get free of a trap. The loss of the limb is painful and might cause the animal to bleed out, but all they see is the ultimate goal. When reading a character like this, it is impossible to get away from "likability". Yes, that old foe of powerful women raises its head yet again. Lada is unlikable. There, I said it. I wouldn't want to be her friend, and she flirts along the edge of being an antihero. She isn't sympathetic. I don't care. Whatever she did, I found understandable, and I wanted her to succeed. I mean, I also want to get her some therapy because she is emotionally constipated, but that is just the teacher in me.I love Radu. Radu was likable. In fact, he is so likable that Radu liking Lada in the early parts of the book is one of the few reasons for liking Lada. Radu uses this as his weapon. The ability to make other trust and love him becomes a blade in his hand. He used it to get what he needs. Information, influence, and loyalty. In his way, he is just as ruthless and cold-blooded as Lada. For example, at the beginning of the book, he is bullied and manages to get revenge after months of planning using a servant boy whom he befriends to manipulate. It turned out well for the serving boy, but Radu still manipulates him. I liked this because I think that often people who are soft and lovable do this unconsciously. We all use the tools we have available. If you like historical fiction, antiheroes, and a unique setting then And I Darken should go on your TBR right this minute.

Review

“Stokke’s openness and honesty that are the chief draw; readers will feel as though they have truly come to know her. (Regine’s Book is) a rare, valuable window into life with a terminal illness.” — Publishers Weekly “Regine’s voice is matter-of-fact and honest…A heartfelt and visually appealing window into Regine’s last year.” — Kirkus Reviews "'Face your fear. Accept your war.' Seventeen-year-old Regine began a blog to document and share her experience after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2008. Selections from her posts are occasionally supplemented with comments left by the supportive and adoring followers of her 15-month journey. Her writing is honest and raw, insightful and inspiring. While her moods swing with the course of her treatment and relapses, her outlook remains steadfastly positive throughout all but the most difficult days. The entries include medical details, physical changes, the reactions of family and friends, and Regine's own search for understanding and acceptance of a world-changing diagnosis. Her obsession with rock music and attending concerts saturates the text as it does her short life, and her original poems and artistic photographs add extra dimension to what is sure to be an inspiring read for a new audience for this moving title that was originally published in Regine's Norway." — Booklist

This was a wonderful book to read about the journey Regine had gone through with this terrible cancer disease. It's tragic she had live such a short life. She had so much to offer and she did with this book. I've lost two relatives two cancer and on their memory I've made a commitment in their memory to being a registered bone marrow donor. It's true that only the best flowers are picked first. She indeed was a beautiful flower...may she rest in peace...

How strong this young lady was. Heart breaking, but yet makes one realize, what one can accomplish, by having a positive attitude. Unbelievable courage, for someone as young as she. Couldn't put the book down, until I got to all the notes people put on her blog. There are to many, and gets boring, trying to read them all. That is why I gave it four stars.

I would reccommend these sellers. They were quick about getting books out. the books were all in shape described. very very satisfied with their service and look for them in the future for other purchases.

Very personal sounding narrative, written in a very engaging style. Heart rending story, but the grace and acceptance are remarkable.

Very sad as she didn't believe in God.

Good book

This book was totally amazing, I am so sorry to Regines families loss, what an amazing, strong and beautiful young lady you raised...

When I picked up `Regine's Book' I know that it was nonfiction and, for the most part, written by a girl who'd died of cancer. If you're like me, then you're asking yourself: "why read a book when you know it will make you cry?" I answered myself "because when I die, I want to leave something meaningful behind for the world...so how dare I ignore what this young woman left?" What an experience I had! Regine was honest, sometimes harsh, and always someone you'll wish you'd gotten the chance to know. I dislike most fiction involving disease and death: so often, the authors tend to rely on melodrama or try to push their religious opinions. This true story is so different, and by far the best way for literature to deal with diseases like cancer. Real people, not characters designed for sympathy, who you might have known, or passed at a bus stop, with human frustrations and complaints, and strengths that rival the greatest fictional heroes...they are the ones to laugh with, cry for, and be inspired by. I started crying almost too hard to keep reading towards the end of `Regine's Book', but it was worth it to have, to some extent, gotten to know her. I was filled with a determination to live life to the fullest, and an appreciation for the human spirit. I was also staggered at what a good writer Regine was. There are many adult authors - darn good ones - who'd have a hard time matching her for flow, style, and expression. She was also an incredible photographer, and you'll get to see many of her beautiful photographs in the book. Please, experience `Regine's Book' - you are missing so much, too much, if you don't.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things: A Novel, by Bryn Greenwood

Review

"If you're looking for a dangerous, shocking, and unexpectedly touching story, this is it...This is a book that will shake you to the core." ―Bustle "31 Books Bringing the Heat this Summer""Captivating and smartly written from the first page, Greenwood's work is instantly absorbing. Pithy characters saunter, charge or stumble into each scene via raw, gripping narrative. . . . [Greenwood] tells her story as if lifting a cloth thread by thread, revealing heartbreaking landscapes and riveting dialogue in perfect timing. This book won't pull at heartstrings but instead yank out the entire organ and shake it about before lodging it back in an unfamiliar position." ―Christina Ledbetter, The Associated Press"This book destroyed me. I have never read anything like it. I came to the end of the novel with my mind-reeling, my emotions scattered, and completely unsure exactly what I did feel about it...but one thing is certain: I felt. Oh hell, I felt. I don't think I'll ever get these characters off my mind." ―Emily May, #1 Worldwide most popular reviewer, Goodreads"The title says it all. You will hold your little heart in your hands and keep blowing on it to make sure it's alive." ―The Top Ten Hottest Reads of 2016, New York Daily News"This is one of those books whose story, if you heard about it on the news or glimpsed some sensationalist headline, would be horrifying, but in THIS book, with THESE characters, where you are privy to interior monologues and backstories and a hundred examples of what defines them as people, it makes sense. It's two damaged people finding something in the other that answers a need, and it's unexpectedly touching. It's so, so impressive. Vibrant. Heartbreaking. Sympathetic. Her writing is astonishing." ―Karen, #1 US most popular reviewer, Goodreads"Bryn Greenwood’s All the Ugly and Wonderful Things [is] so freakishly good and dangerous that it should come with a warning label... The writing is direct and muscular, a snake with all the slithery danger of a coiled rattler on a hot rock. VERDICT: Greenwood (from Kansas, daughter of a “mostly reformed drug dealer”) astounds in creating a world where assorted murderers, felons, and thieves are sympathetic. Alternating narrators à la The Sound and the Fury create a dynamic where Lolita meets a dissonance of values/taboo romance like East of Eden, Damage, or The Little Mermaid." ―Library Journal"Bryn Greenwood has handed readers a strange - but strangely grabbing - tale." ―Harry Levins, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Best of 2016"Greenwood's haunting novel...is a story that will stay with readers long after the book is finished." ―Lisa McLendon, The Wichita Eagle"[A] powerful, provocative debut...intelligent, honest, and unsentimental." ―Kirkus Reviews (STARRED)"An emotionally resonant novel with an unlikely cast of characters you won’t soon forget. Bryn Greenwood’s unique voice and her understanding of human nature offer an amazing tale of family, loss, and love that’s as unpredictable and inspiring as love itself." ―Brunonia Barry, New York Times bestselling author of The Lace Reader"Written in lyrical and searingly honest prose, Bryn Greenwood tells a powerful story of love and resilience against the bleakest of backdrops. Like the best fiction, this is a novel that means to disturb and challenge as it forces us to look with compassion on every last one of its flawed, memorable characters. I was captivated from the first page to the last." ―Patry Francis, three time nominee for the Pushcart Prize and author of The Orphans of Race Point"Gritty and dark and tough and uncomfortable, but it's brilliantly constructed...Greenwood develops an incredible and resilient character in Wavy. It's an outstanding debut novel and I am itching for Greenwood's next book." ―Kelly Jensen, Book Riot"Greenwood is a gifted writer, and Wavy's story will stick to your bones long after you put this book down. These characters will fast become friends, and you will find yourself reluctant to leave their ugly and wonderful little world." ―Madeline Lemieux, Creative Loafing Charlotte"Incredible book alert...Another true page turner as Greenwood takes her reader on an emotional bungee jump that requires you to decide for yourself what you can and can not accept given the grimmest of circumstances." (5 out of 5 stars) ―Erin Woodward, The Girly Book Club"All the Ugly and Wonderful Things is just that: ugly and wonderful all at the same time. An epic love story...This book will be the birth of a vibrant debate about the law and societal norms as your book club members will truly be divided by the actions of our male lead. I'd love to be a fly on the wall for this one!" ―InStyle UK“Achingly raw and beautifully written, All the Ugly and Wonderful Things is both a hypnotic coming-of-age story and a heartbreaking tragedy. Greenwood’s emotional prose and her well-drawn characters immediately drew me in and kept me captivated. I’m still thinking about Wavy, and her ugly and wonderful world, long after I’ve turned the last page.” ―Jillian Cantor, author of Margot and The Hours Count"Bryn Greenwood is so good it hurts. Her writing is lean, precise, elegant and dripping with the telling detail-the understated bit of dialogue that reveals everything." ―Robert Ferrigno, New York Times bestselling author of Monkey Boyz, Horse Latitudes, the Prayer for the Assassin trilogy and other novels"The author skillfully creates widely varied and original voices... a memorable coming-of-age tale about loyalty, defiance, and the power of love under the most improbable circumstances." ―Publishers Weekly

I was so in love with this book at first. The dynamic father-daughter relationship of Wavy and Kellen is heartwarming. As Wavy grows and is protected by Kellen, the reader begins to thing of him just as Wavy did — her protective “gentle giant”. Unfortunately, the author took her opportunity to turn this into a truly amazing “who are we to judge love?” book, and instead turned it into pedophendllia. Love was what drove the reader to smile when little Wavy hugged Kellen, but disgust is what makes the reader shiver when a 28 year old man talks about a 12 year olds boobs. This book is not one that pushes your thinking, that makes relatives uncomfortable at thanksgiving with differing opinions, this is a disgusting book of the grooming of a virtual sex slave, and makes readers uncomfortable for all the wrong reasons. We root for Kellen at first, the author twisting our mindsets into thinking it’s nothing more than platonic, and when it suddenly turns sexual, we are not as disturbed as we should be. A man “marrying” a 13 year old is a molester, not the hero he is depicted as

Do not buy this book. I have never written a review before but this book was so disgusting I feel compelled to warn people. If I could give it 0 stars I would. Is it well written? Yes. For someone who condones pedophilia. I only read to the end because I couldn’t believe that a book so popular wouldn’t end with the victim living a life far from her abuser. I was wrong. Not sorry for spoiling the ending. I can’t believe Amazon is even willing to sell this. It seems like it should be sold by some secret NAMBLA website to justify a man’s sexual relationship with a 13 year old (though the inappropriate activity starts even younger). I am not a prude. Consider myself a liberal feminist (so not some conservative who believes in censorship) but this is awful.I myself wish I had read more of the reviews before I purchased this book and didn’t go by the overall star rating. I’m disappointed with my fellow readers for rating it so highly. I’m about to read “A Handmaids Tale” and feel like I’ll be less disturbed.

I couldn't even finish this book. This seems like a book a pedophile would love. The relationship between a child and adult should never be like the one that is described. I can't believe with all that's going on in the world right now and the new awareness of victims that this book receives such great reviews. It is alarming.I'm not a huge trigger warning guy unless I think something really warrants a trigger warning but here is one for ya: victims of assault, especially for adults that endured it as a child, read with caution.

I literally had to walk away from this a few times because the relationship was too disturbing. Are we really supposed to be moved by their happy ever after? I don't care if this is dirt poor meth-labville, Oklahoma. I don't care if these relationships actually happen. I can't get OK with tying up in a big pretty bow in the end. I was never rooting for them, I didnt see the 'romantic', I saw a lot of needing therapy. A happy ever after would be that she got out of that gutter, did great in school, moved on, had a life of age appropriate relationships, and succeeded despite her past.

I had to finish this book, at the expense of everything else in my life. I could not put it down. Is it sad? Yes. Is it disturbing? Yes. Does it hit you in the feels? Yes. The whole premise should be off-limits, but strangely, it's not. It's so well written and so compelling that you can't help but be drawn into this world. No child should be cursed with parents like that, my heart broke for her. Wavy finds some comfort in this stranger, the only person in her life that is looking out for her and her brother. Is this whole relationship wrong? Perhaps, but he is broken as well. Read it and make your decisions.

I have heard so many good and bad things about this book! After reading a review I just knew this book wasn't for me. After hearing good things about this book from several book friends I was still not reading. But one day I went on NetGalley, after being in a horrible funk and requested to review. I had this book on my iPad for the longest time and I finally read 4 days before its release. At the 40% mark I found myself NOT hating this book like I thought I would. This book was so different than what I was expecting. Granted the whole falling in love while she was a minor was rough for me. Several times I kept saying she's a child stop but I also felt their connection. What kind of person does this make me?! Several times I would say aww how sweet but then I remembered Wavy was just a child!!!This book isn't for everyone and lord knows I didn't think I would like it but I did. Even though there are some uneasy scenes in this book, the whole book wasn't based on their taboo relationship. Wavy and her brother, Donal suffered tragedy after tragedy. No kids should have gone through what they did. Every time things got a little better the rug would get pulled from under them. This book truly does show all the ugly and wonderful things in life. The story was one of a kind and I couldn't stop reading. The writing was excellent. I would have given it 5 stars but the messing around while she was a minor wasn't cool. This story will definitely stay with me for a long time. I'm happy I forced myself way outside my comfort zone and read this story. I look forward to reading more works from this author.4.5 Stars
