I'm in my 60's, and I've been playing guitar and other stringed instruments (mandolin, fiddle, banjo) for most of my life. I've always depended on my ear, which is pretty good, and on the bits of theory I'd pick up here and there. Mostly I've played out of patterns, major scales, and minor pentatonic scales. A lot of guitar can be played out of patterns, but I've always felt I was missing a whole world of possible sounds and expressions, and decided to do something about it. I began buying books on various aspects of guitar playing, mostly tending toward jazz chords, arpeggios, extensions, and that sort of thing. I've found a few books worth studying, but this one, The Practical Guide to Modern Music Theory for Guitarists, is definitely the one I'd be happy to refer any guitarist looking to better his/her playing abilities. Mr. Alexanderbegins the book with a fairly complete look at how music works--the major scale, minor scales, how chords are built, common chord progressions, and the like. I thought I knew most of this stuff, but he managed, with straightforward, clear expositions, to fill me in on details that I hadn't realized I hadn't known.The meat of the book, once the preliminaries are out of the way, focuses on modes and how they can be utilized; building chords on the individual degrees of each mode, soloing, and much more. There's much work to be done by the student here, but much to be gained. I've been working with the Dorian mode to begin, but I'll be utilizing the information in this well-written book for many months, at least. I feel like my playing has already benefitted from the studies presented here, though I've only begun. I can't recommend this book highly enough to my fellow guitarists.

This book is pretty good. I have accrued a lot of theory books over the years, I pick them up whenever I can, each one usually has at least one thing that it explains better than the others. I am a guitarist, but I tend to prefer books that cover theory in a more generalized, instrument agnostic fashion. I dunno, I think this stuff just gels better with me when it's more abstract.I think this book in particular is a great starter book for guitarists that want to play basic, traditional rock-n-roll. While it does have some good information about diatonic scales and modes, there's a pretty strong slant towards pentatonic playing... that can be good or bad depending on what you're trying to accomplish.This book is straightforward and easy to understand, and honestly better than most of the shorter theory books out there. There is one thing that It does a great job at hammering home: the difference between a mode and a position... this particular topic is a bit of a pet peeve of mine because it was something I had a lot of problems with when I was younger. I don't know, I guess I've always found the complete lack of clear information on this topic frustrating. It makes me wonder how many instructors understand it themselves?Worth a look for sure.

This guy really knows how to write an instruction book that is actually useful. After buying a few titles on Amazon and being disappointed, Joseph's books have been by far the most useful (at this time I have three of his books).I have been an acoustic-strumming-only guitar player for years. I bought an electric a few years ago, but I have basically been playing it like an acoustic. Now I'm really trying to expand my playing. I do know quite a bit of music theory for a non-pro musician. That knowledge let me skim through the first section of the book and get to the modal exercises which is more "guitar specific". Great help in learning to improve my lead guitar playing.Most instruction books like this have a CD with the physical book, but offer nothing for Kindle versions making the books worthless. However, with this book you get to download the audio from his web site. Very awesome. And if you want the book as PDF, he'll send that also.

Very clear explanation of music theory, including the straightforward ways to work with the circle of 5ths, using the guitar fretboard as the basis of where the notes are rather than a keyboard is much easier to directly equate to the instrument. The audio examples I downloaded to go with the book are also clearly marked within the book. Following along and playing, or just listen, then play, then re-listen you know if you have the concept down. Not quite like being in a private lesson, but like any other learning task, you get out of it what you put in. I'm learning more about playing guitar through this book than I have with just playing chords from a music book over the last 35-40 years. The lessons are in small enough chunks to not be overwhelming, but are still pushing the reader forward with the concepts. This would be a good book for anyone who even just wants a refresher on music theory applied to playing guitar. I'm about halfway through, but have looked ahead to see how all is building steadily. Like all books of this format, you'll need something to hold it open, in particular when new.

I have several guitar books by Joseph Alexander and have found them all to be "breathrough" type of books. I have played guitar on and off for many years and am now ready to settle down to some serious study in my retirement. I have taken basic music theory and some ear training so I am already familiar with some of the fundamentals but what I love about this book is how it applies music theory to the guitar. Most of time theory is taught in relation to the piano. I love how the author breaks down each concept and there is plenty of application through short drills along with audio files to hear what the concepts sound like. I want to put in a good musical foundation to grow on and I think this book is the perfect teacher. And speaking of teachers, most teachers don't teach you anything about theory, only about chords or chord forms. Also I like that I can do this at my own (sometimes slow) pace. Bravo!

Well, you can take rest it is not that type of book.This book is very personal and emotional that tells a very human tale about the American way of living in our lifetime. The author, Steven Greenhouse, gives justice to the ordinary and average American workers who are being mistreated and exploited here in the U.S. The book contains several stories about the personal struggles of individuals who were all just searching for a better treatment at work.What I gained reading from this book is that this is The United States of America the nation that ended child labor, gave women the right to vote, equality to all, and a bright future for everyone. So, why can't we maintain all of those and strive to better our work environment/salary/life? It is very apparent that our wages are not raising along with the expenses we incur in our livelihood. It is time for the corporation to raise wages and stop messing with our healthcare plans because these are the very things that made the USA the greatest and wealthiest nation around the world from the 1950s onward to the 1990s.Well, I encourage people especially in Business Ethics courses in college to read this book. Also, I'm looking at you UCF Cornerstone course if you want your students to learn more about how to manage workers in business then this is one of those books students should read about in their classes.

This book doesn’t really provide a complete picture of the situation. The economics of the situation of American workers are ignored, unions are revered as pure and incorruptible champions of its workers it claims to represent, and the other side’s reasoning isn’t explained but rather demonized.

What a wonderful book, filled with real stories of hard workers who can't quite make it in modern America. The book clearly shows how the balance of power between management and labor has led to a low-paying jobs and tremendous injustices at the workplace. This is a must-read book for anybody who wants to understand why hard-working, educated people can't find decent jobs. Imagine what it's like for less educated people! Greenhouse gets into that, too.

Then read this book. It is both depressimg and inspiring all at once. The author is admittingly biased, but he does present some solid data in regard to the decline of the middle class in this country. It's too bad that even though the data is out there, many Americans refuse to look at it and believe it and keep voting for politicians who make policy that benefits the very wealthy. The game is rigged and this book exposes it.

This book should be a mandatory read for all graduating high school seniors. They are in for a rude and damaging shock if they think that corporate America will give them a fair shake. I loved the many real stories that the author gives the reader that show time and again how the rich, established business interest will go to almost any means to take advantage of our most vulnerable, hard working citizens. Where is our government? Why is it not protecting us? The short answer is that our government is for sale and corporate America has the money so they buy what they want. I hope that we can find the political will to put back in place strong workplace protections for workers and at the same time, demand that our large companies treat their employees in an ethical, honest and fair manner. This book tells all the dirty secrets and it is a disgusting, heart wrenching story. Not only did our large corporations wreck our economy, they are hell bent on making us a 3rd World workplace!

Great book for voicing the opinion of the working class. However, the book didn't do well to rationally explain the opposing viewpoint, simply demonizing them at every opportunity. The book opened my eyes to some things I really had no idea about, so I'm grateful for that.

Anyone seeking insights into the problems faced by the American worker should start here. Greenhouse writes a terrifying yet compelling narrative of ordinary Americans who have been increasingly squeezed as corporations relentlessly search for profits.

This book was for my class but it's very informative and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know anything about anything. The delivery was fast and the quality of the book is fantastic.

My neurologist recommended this book to deal with my status migraine. I rolled my eyes when she first said it because it's like -- come on migraines are horrific isn't there a pill to take? News flash. There is no magic pill. All the medications I've been on have failed and I had to take my healing into my own hands. This book is a great resource. I've since recommended to anyone dealing with pain. It's not a book of yoga poses. It offers many methods to deal with the pain. Try them all and see what work for you. Meditation, Breathing, Restorative yoga, yoga practice -- I cannot recommend this book enough. It really changed my life.

The feeling of pain is not located in the part that hurts, but resides in the central nervous system. Chronic pain occurs when peripheral pain persists beyond the immediacy of the trauma that caused it. Chronic pain can result in physical or emotional trauma. Chronic pain is an adaptation that protects against the recurrence of the injury that provoked it. Sometimes chronic pain persists well beyond the healing time when it was protective. Various mind-body treatments address the reduction or even the elimination of chronic pain, whether the origin is physical or emotional. This book delineates one highly successful approach to the reduction or elimination of chronic pain based on the thousand-year-old practices of the breath-centered body movement of gentle yoga and mindful meditation. McGonigal explains, demonstrates, and documents, various yoga practices that have worked for many. She provides alternatives so that each person can develop a practice suitable to their needs. This is a welcome introduction to the application of our current understanding of the integration of mind and body. Whether you are seeking the relief of pain or just catching up on the application of the latest neuroscience, this book is well worth reading.

I haven't gotten all the way through this program/practice yet, but to the point I am at now, the base of pain relief is mental and emotional and what I was seeking is a physical yoga practice to reduce and HEAL the damage from where the pains originate. That is, if a tight muscle us CAUSING the bunion that hurts, I don't seek friendship and acceptance of the bunion; I seek releasing the.muscle that is misaligning the bone that IS the bunion.Perhaps the answer lies later in this process, however, I haven't arrived at that point yet--assuming that it is included.

It's a great book, but don't buy the kindle version. It's hard to reference if you want to skip around.

This has good information, but a lot of it was stuff I had already learned through various research and classes I have been to. The layout is kind of odd and I was hoping for more (or clearer) sequences for specific pain relief (if you have hip pain, do these. If you have neck pain, do these). It's more about breathing and noticing pain, and then doing some general gentle movements, which can be very effective. It is a good resource but not what I was looking for.

Really loved the well covered different aspects of holistic practice of yoga and mindfulness, that you can bring for managing your pain.But for me as a person who has been doing yoga and trying to keep my mindfulness practice alive, focus in this book on 'bhavana' or attitude while entering meditation or yoga practice makes it a very refreshing exploration of these practices in journey to befriend the pain

Finally, a book written by somebody who not only gets pain science and yoga, but who actually understands what "yoga" means. It's not only going to a gym and paying for a sweaty class trying to bend better than everyone else or hold a pose or sweat in a bikram class. From my understanding, the word "yoga" actually encompasses three separate parts - they can be done alone or combined - meditation, breath, and movement ("poses"). I haven't been using it long, but I have had annoying chronic pain and know that my body is sensitized to pain. So far, even just the breathing exercises help me feel more open and accepting!!! I was dubious to buy this because it was "yoga," but I read enough about it to suspect it was much more.Only 1 complaint: There's tons of pictures in the book, but video for exercises (breathing and poses both) would help a lot! Outstandingly written. A simple truth expressed very well, with how-to information.How do you best handle a chronic condition in you body? First, befriend your body, and enlist your body's aid. Remember, the two oxen pull the cart better in cooperation, than they do in contention.I have a yoga student with chronic pain. I began guiding her towards controlling the suffering she was experiencing, and she responded very well. Then I found this book. It expressed in words, what I had been doing by intuition. I read the book in one (rather long) sitting. It is engaging, enlightening, and honest. I shall gift her this book at the next class.The clearly laid out logic of why this approach works, and how to utilize this approach, are helpful for people who have not yet distinguished between pain and suffering.Highest recommendation.
